The story of Xenki, an in your browser viewer for OpenSim and Second Life (you can download the source on Forge.OpenSimulator), began with a stream of tweets from Dr_Manhattan (Kyle Gomboy, avatar G2 Proto) - power house of the Microsoft Developer Community in OpenSim (see Project Manhattan), and Second Life (see here) - announcing the merging of DirectX and WPF in the .NET 3.51 SP1 release. I was not the only one to notice these ...

And the story goes on. It's dejavu all over again, people building viewers for virtual words - just like the times people were doing that for the real world - when internet was young. History repeats itself and I'm as enthusiastic about it as I can be :P

Vivaty, the recently launched virtual scenes environment that works on AIM and Facebook as an integrated application, is opening up its platform, extending more custom options to developers and users. This is occurring more quickly than we typically see with other similar virtual environments, as Vivaty just launched a few weeks ago, but the competition is getting pretty steep for Web-based virtual worlds and increased user interaction will help Vivaty attract users on a widened ...

I recently stumbled across Vator.tv, which is essentially a social network for startups. The tag line here is “What’s your pitch?” The twists are that Vator really does focus on the network aspect, it’s a place to legitimately announce and share news, and you’re encouraged to upload homestyle video. There are layers of participation, and it’s hopping with great ideas and talent. A lot of up-and-comers are on here like Zivity, EveryZing, Vivaty, Xoopit and ...

The past few weeks have seen the release of Google Lively and Electric Sheep Company’s WebFlock. 3D environments have been around for years, with the initial attempts using VRML, an HTML like markup language. VRML was an interesting idea but had problems because the computers and typical network speeds for users made the environments too slow to be usable. Now, cable modems and dual-core processors remove the speed problems, but we have not seen many ...

Sibley Verbeck is moving past Second Life. The CEO of the Electric Sheep Company has made a lot of money creating virtual islands in Second Life for big brands such as CBS, Showtime, and Intel. But now he is ready to bring those virtual worlds to the Web in regular browsers. Today, he is releasing WebFlock, a Flash-based 3-D virtual world application he is offering as a hosted software service. WebFlock worlds are private-label virtual ...

Intel, HP, IBM, Sequoia Capital, SK Telecom, Docomo, Time Warner 등 ...

So at this point, I imagine everyone has seen the news about Google finally decloaking off the virtual bow with Lively. The coverage showed up in both the gaming press, where Google shared a bunch of tidbits that seemed to indicate a PR outreach to the gaming community, and also of course in the tech press, where commenters seemed overall less than impressed, questioning how Lively relates to Google’s avowed purpose of “organizing the world’s ...

Virtual worlds like Second Life have a silo issue—they are virtual worlds unto themselves. Today, Linden Lab (which operates Second Life) and IBM announced that they have successfully bridged two virtual worlds, with avatars from Second Life successfully “teleporting” to an entirely different metaverse based on an OpenSim server. The two companies have been working together on the Open Grid Protocol to allow for interoperability between virtual worlds. In a post on the Second Life ...

We’ve all heard about Second Life. I loved it, but it didn’t “stick” for a whole bunch of reasons. Meaning, it didn’t go mainstream, even though it had a HUGE amount of hype. Why not? Well, it was an island that you had to go into. Problem is, only gamers do that and Second Life wasn’t enough of a game. World of Warcraft came along and took a lot of the gamers away from it. ...
