Another day, another browser. Stainless was released by Mesa Dynamics as a proof of concept. The concept? A working, less ambitious version of Google’s Chrome browser. According to the Stainless website, it is available (for free) now simply because the project is less ambitious than the eventual version of Chrome on the Mac. Besides the fact that it doesn’t have all the robust backend features Chrome will eventually have on its Mac version, from an ...

WebKit, the rendering engine that powers browsers Safari and Chrome, among others, says it has passed all three stages of the ACID 3 test. The test checks how well a browser supports JavaScript and the Document Object Model (DOM), as well as a few other treats, like SVG graphics. You can check your browser here. Opera and WebKit passed the first two stages of the ACID 3 test shortly after its release in March. These ...

Quite a while ago Opera updated their JavaScript engine. Then Firefox and Webkit (Safari) did that, after that Google Chrome and Firefox again, and now… Webkit’s (Safari) turn, introducing SquirrelFish Extreme. So how fast is it? As this graph shows, it’s more than 2 times faster than the original SquirrelFish, an engine which was announced not so long time ago. (more…)

Are you a Mac user with Google Chrome envy? You really shouldn’t be, especially now that the latest builds of WebKit use a ridiculously fast Javascript engine called SquirrelFish Extreme. The new engine, conveniently shortened to SFE, is actually faster than Chrome Javascript engine, V8. (It’s actually faster than the version of V8 currently floating around SVN, which is faster than the version that’s found in Chrome.) Faster, more efficient Javascript processing improves the performance ...

Filed under: Internet, Internet ToolsEven though Google Chrome is still only available for Windows, its WebKit roots mean that Safari for Mac users might still get some extra perks. Gears, Google's web API that lets developers create applications that can run offline, is one of those perks. Previously, Gears was only available for Firefox on the Mac, and it certainly didn't feel like there was any priority in bringing Gears to Safari. Well, with Google's ...

Summary: JavaScript Benchmarks aren't adapting well to the rapid increase in JavaScript engine performance. I provide some simple tests for verifying this and propose a modified setup which could be used by all JavaScript Benchmarks to achieve high-quality results. There now exists three, what I would consider to be, major JavaScript performance benchmarks. Each are released by a major browser vendor. WebKit released SunSpider, Mozilla released Dromaeo, Google released the V8 Benchmark. Each suite has ...
