Previous version of Laptop Cop let you remotely delete (or retrieve) files from a stolen laptop, but the newest feature makes it genuinely worth paying for: Real-time geo-location using just Wi-Fi. It uses Skyhook, the same Wi-Fi location tech used by the iPhone to triangulate your position against Wi-Fi access points. Convenient, since we're not quite at the stage where laptops have built-in GPS for lojacking (though it's probably not too far off). Unfortunately, for ...

When the G1 launched, there was an uproar over T-Mobile's 1GB-a-month soft data cap that would slow your connection down to a 50kbps trickle, and they backpedaled. Guess what? The cap's coming back. The good: The new cap is 10GB, a fairly reasonably amount for mobile data (really, that's like over 300MB a day). After you hit 10GB, your connection will be throttled down to 50kbps, just like T-Mobile's original cap plan. The bad: It ...

The new streaming media service would be built upon Microsoft’s Live Mesh software platform that allows users to share and synchronize data between multiple devices via an Internet connection. Live Mesh-based services, like Calendar sharing, are already available on Windows PCs with expansion to Mac and Windows Mobile devices expected in the near future. The Blockbuster ...

In a conference call earlier today, Clearwire Corporation's CEO Benjamin Wolff spoke enthusiastically about the 'new' post-merger Clearwire and the company's ambitious plans to "reinvent wireless" by developing a nationwide mobile WiMAX network (the company will retain the Clearwire name, but its products will be referred to as Clear). Wolff didn't hide the fact that the Sprint-Clearwire deal had been left for dead on more than one occasion, acknowledging that today's announcement is the culmination ...

The Sprint/Clearwire joint WiMax venture announced back in July is a done deal, as is the $3.2 billion investmentfrom Intel, Google and others. The WiMax network will branded Clear, replacing the stupid Xohm moniker. Initially, the network will deliver an average of 2-4Mbps downstream, with the first devices outside of laptops and USB modems arriving in the middle of next year—stuff like mobile internet devices and MP3 players. Another interesting tidbit: Clearwire is building the ...

You can turn your boring laptop into a touchscreen tablet using the Duo Wireless Digital Pen Mouse. You just need to clip the gadget to the top of the LCD, and then pick up the pen part of the ensemble and start drawing, scribbling and writing directly on the laptop’s screen. The Duo Wireless Digital Pen Mouse is priced at approximately $44 each. [Product Page] ShareThis

The Federal Communications Commission imposes decency standards on publicly broadcast radio and television signals. No surprise, then, to hear it’s looking to do the same to the free wireless Internet service it envisions in the AWS III spectrum. At its December meeting, the FCC is expected to push forward with another major spectrum auction, one that would require the winning bidder to use a portion of those airwaves to offer a free broadband service. Smut-free, ...

Modding your laptop to add a touchscreen is certainly possible, though you'll need to be pretty competent with tools: with the Duo gizmo all you need to be able to do is clip it to your screen. The two-piece device has a sensor you pop on top of your monitor or laptop screen and a wireless pen sensor—in combination they can give you that tablet-PC-alike pen-control performance you may have been yearning for, though only ...

The MX W1, however, have 2.4GHz wireless built-into each piece which will certainly make you look like a giant douche, but at least a giant douche without tangled wires. Reportable, the whole device has a 10 hour battery life and utilize wireless technology ...

Flickr and Wikipedia also provided frequent updates from the ground. Arrington didn’t mention Global Voices, which put together a good package on the attacks based largely on blogs. When it comes to mobile phones, China is perhaps best known for its copycat handsets. You know them – looking like the originals but offering fewer features and a built quality that makes them un-recommendable. However, QiGi i6, one of the latest smartphones to come from China, is nothing like that. It’s a quite nicely-designed device. Yet the handset is not interesting due to its look, but due to its ability to run either Windows ...
