Книгу Вивиан Итин издал по собственной инициативе в типографии газеты «Канский крестьянин» в 1922 году тиражом 800 (по другим данным — 500) экземпляров. «Аэлита» Алексея Толстого вышла на несколько месяцев позже и «Страна Гонгури» считается первым научно-фантастическим романом, вышедшим в Советской России. Книга пользовалась большой популярностью: стоила она дёшево (всего-то 20 000 рублей за штуку!) и местные мужики использовали её на цигарки, таким образом, почти весь тираж первого советского фантастического романа просто-напросто скурили.
