I like the word "woot". It's fun to use. I only use it in writing though (and in my head to myself), I would never have the nerve to say it out loud. I also think I'm using it ironically. I say it to mock people who use it seriously. Because why bother to say something if you're not slamming someone in the process?Even if it's not a slam or a jab or an ironic ...

This article is part of the Open Web Awards, an open, international contest for the best websites and services. Unlike most categories in The Open Web Awards, social shopping is comprised largely of companies that sell physical goods (or at least procure them on behalf of their customers). Last year, our people’s choice winner was Zlio, a French company that lets you create your own online stores, while our judge’s choice was Woot, the “deal ...

Honda's taking another stab at the growing assisted walking market (that's a market!?), this time with what appears to be a robot that hides between your legs and pokes you in the genitals. The device will supporting a portion of user's body weight whether they're crouching, walking or climbing stairs and is meant to help both those physically weakened with age or injury as well as workers who would need to reduce the stress on ...

This is actually quite brilliant. Anybody who crouches a lot like the guy pictured can tell you how much work it is.

Today’s Woot Shirt is the first in their series of “Video Games Through Art History” designs, a Da Vinci-style reinterpretation of the nightmarish Winged Spiny Shell. Mario Kart isn’t my thing, but I hear other people like it, and this is a pretty great shirt design. I predict that at least ten of my dollars will disappear into the internet this week.

I purchased one of these tiny Acer Aspire One netbooks overseas and would highly recommend it - if you’re up for some easy low cost upgrades. I added the bit about upgrading it because who is ever content with a standard configuration machine? If you head on over to Woot, the tiny netbook is on sale for $289. Check out the discussion on the Woot boards here. I’ll be honest and say that the 8 ...

Computing in the cloud: it rocks. Instead of working with programs and documents on your PC or Mac, you move the whole experience (along with the app and all your data) online. That means there's no more syncing, no more installing, and no more backing up. Now that Microsoft has announced its entry into the cloud-computing arena, calling its upcoming cloud system "Azure," you can see a trend developing. With broadband speeds increasing and connectivity ...

In what is probably the second-worst consumer complaint we've received, Millard is mad at deal-a-day site Woot because he bought a black iPod from them and it came with white headphones. He demands black headphones. Woot needs your help in solving this consumer crisis. Millard does not care that Apple only makes white ones (unless you're getting special U2 iPods, which this wasn't). Now he wants Woot to pay for the black headphones he was ...

The Automaton plugin from Audio Damage uses the rules of cellular automata for sequence and manipulation of audio. It's AU/VST format compatible and comes with four built-in effects, each with independently customizable behavior. Life simulating algorithms are being used for generative music more and more lately, and for good reason. These techniques can add evolving depth and detail to the oft-repetitive default behaviors of popular music software. Plus, they're fun to play with; set up ...
