Currently half-way through The Limits of Power: The End of American Exceptionalism by my old CO Andrew Bacevich, and I have to say it is quite the eye opener. It is a short read, so I will finish it tomorrow on the flight and give a fuller review later, but one thing is worth a quick comment right now. Bacevich revisits the Carter “Crisis in Confidence” speech (aka the “Malaise” speech), and that prompted me ...

If you didn’t know, yesterday was Domino Day 2008 ("Celebrating 10 Years of Domino Day"). The goal of Domino Day is simple: to set a new world record of highest number of falling dominoes. Robin Paul Weijers (AKA Mr. Domino) and his team set up 4.5 million dominoes in Leeuwarden, the Netherlands, and ended up setting a new world record by toppling more than 4.3 million dominoes. From Wikipedia: … the record was broken with ...

Researchers from ETH Zurich's Department of Power Electronics have developed a matchbook-sized motor that can spin faster than any other machine in the world—over 1,000,000 rpm. In order to keep it from falling apart at such high speeds, the researchers employed a titanium shell, ultra-thin copper wire for the windings and a mysterious top-secret iron that is "previously unused for machines." So does this mean we will all be seeing million rpm engines and hard ...

Mixed feelings about a government bail-out ALL right, we're in danger of overloading on the automaker stuff. Still, it's fascinating to see some of the thngs being written on the issue from Detroiters (correct me, Detroiters, if this isn't the correct word). Take this, for instance, from the Detroit Free Press:It's over, folks. No matter what comes of the increasingly frantic Detroit bailout talks in Washington, or General Motors Corp.'s desperate bid to keep its ...

Same with Cleveland. It's just a bunch of people and politicians desperately hanging on to the past. The Democratic party and unions have killed the great State of Ohio. It's time for a new dawn in Cleveland and Detroit. That new dawn starts with education and service sector jobs. Manufacturing will continue to wane. Why can't our so-called "leaders" so the writing on the wall? Are they really that blind?
