Every so often I get one of these offers - just write an article (or two, or three) for us free of charge and it will help you market your freelance writing business by giving you exposure as a writer on our website. You probably know the kind of offer that I mean. If you’re a freelance writer, then you’ve probably gotten some of these offers yourself. Now, a decade or two ago, this type ...

Have you ever read an article or advertisement and when you finish it, you say to yourself, “What the heck did I just read?” For the copywriter or advertising agency, this means failure. The last thing you want to do when writing copy is confuse your reader. Mixed messages and jumbled meanings cause readers to tune out and turn off. When that happens, you lose the sale or fail to reach the goal. There are ...

Using a data analysis tool that monitors new books, research papers, broadcast transcripts and news sources, Oxford University came up with a list of the top 10 most irritating phrases. Headed by "At the end of the day" and capped with "It's not rocket science," it's both an eye-rolling exercise in familiarity and a good lesson in phrases to avoid in your own presentations and writing. The readers of the BBC's online magazine, however, add ...

People don't hate those phrases... they just hate the contexts within which they're brought up.

Here comes the irony: this LifeHacker post is so pointless that I feel like to share it with you. Go ahead and read it if you want to, but I've done my part long, long time ago and yeah I couldn't care less because it is what it IS. There, I said it. If anyone tried to act smart by avoiding those oh-so-cliches, you can go whine all the way because I couldn't care less. Again. I couldn't care less.

I really dislike lists like these. It's not because I don't think people should be allowed their opinions of what they find irritating (though the types of people for whom they are irritating typically are thinking too hard about the phrases themselves in an effort to make themselves look smarted), it's more because most of these aren't cliches but rather simply adverbial expressions that are quite common. Especially when the list comes from somewhere like Oxford University, passing itself off as "educated knowledge". Clearly none of the people claiming these to be offensive, cliche phrases understands anything about Descriptive Linguistics; the phrases are there because people use them for some pragmatic import. It would be one thing to say they should not be used in scholarly writing; it's another thing entirely to say they should not be used. I find it telling that most of the people in the second list claim ashamedly that they themselves use the phrases they hate!

On n'aurait tort de ne voir dans "Après la démocratie" – l'ouvrage d'Emmnuel Todd qui vient de parître – qu'un pamphlet contre Sarkozy, Guaino, les économistes officiels, les lieux commun de l'époque. Au-delà de cet aspect très conjoncturel, « Après la démocratie » prolonge une réflexion engagée dans l'illusion économique il y a 10 ans. Le point de départ du livre, c'est le constat selon lequel la grille d'analyse classique de la pensée toddienne qui ...

Dr/Sen. Tom Coburn was among the first Republican senators to release a statement on the election results. Is a challenge to McConnell in the offing? "On November 4, the American people had the opportunity to choose between two candidates with the character and temperament to be not just good presidents but great presidents. John McCain ran the best campaign he could in a very difficult environment and he showed the country, once again, with his ...

Excerpt: "Our president-elect offered an olive branch to Republicans last night to 'heal the divides that have held back progress.' We would be wise to accept his offer, roll up our sleeves and work together on areas where we can agree. The unmistakable mandate everyone in public office can take from this election is that it's time to define a 'new kind of politics' with our actions, not just our words. The space between the parties is a vast frontier of consensus and possibility. The American people have always called this area 'common sense.' It's time for elected officials to put aside their careerist aspirations in service to this ideal."
