传统上认为科学是最有革命性（颠覆、颠倒）的力量，但自后现代主义兴起以来，西方文科学 者往往把对启蒙后现代思想、现代制度的批评引向对科学本身的批评。科学在后现代话语中成了守旧的象征，科学家被描述为只会计算的，成为统治机器一部分的专家精 英；相反艺术被普遍寄予厚望，成为当今社会的批判性力量，提供给我们通向另一种生活的希望。哲学的传统形象是：一翼与科学相邻，一翼与艺 术相邻。那么在后现代话语里就是：艺术在左，科学在右了。这句话很好地概括了今天人们对科学和艺术的一般观点，但不可否认科学家中，特别是最优秀科学家身上仍 然闪烁着智慧的光芒，而不仅仅是计算，在他们身上仍有最深刻的思想和对人类命运的洞见，他们仍然关心人类的未来，思索科学家在现代社会中的责任。这样 的例子并不少见，从反对核武器的泡林，贝特到争取自由的萨哈罗夫。就其起源，科学与艺术也是有关联的。一方面科学来自古希腊的哲学传统， 即思辩和数学，另一方面科学也与工艺传统有关。工艺就是art，最初在古希腊就是一项项实用的技艺，建筑神庙是技艺，雕刻也是技艺，唱诗也是技艺等等。工 艺传统在文艺复兴时期的达芬奇身上有着集中的体现，一方面达芬奇是最伟大的艺术家，同时他又被种种技术问题——很多是他在作画时碰到的技术问题——所吸引，并 自然地导致了很多科学和工程的发现。作为科学家的达芬奇在那个时代也是伟大的，他用他绘画的技艺，精确地描画了人和自然。如此精细的对人类骨骼的描画，暗示了一条本质上不同于古希腊哲学的认识论路线，即通过精确地描述事物本身（而非思辩）来达到对事物的认识。这是达芬奇画的漩涡，在照相机出现前，如果没有达芬奇的绘画技艺，没有他对精确描绘事物的热忱，我们是无法想像有这样令人惊叹的关于漩涡运动某一瞬间的精细图像的。达芬奇提倡的这种从描绘事物本身出发，而非从圣经或亚里士多德的经典出发来认识事物的认识论路线正是导向近代自然科学的关键。今 天从事艺术创作和艺术批评的人如果不了解科学精神，不理解最重要的科学概念，这不得不说是一种遗憾。事实上，许多出自科学的重要概念和结论正被艺术家和艺 术批评家们频繁地使用着，比如“时间的起点”，“多世界”，“测不准”，“互补性”等等。对科学概念的不恰当使用和推广有时会出现灾难性后果，比如“进化 论”和“适者生存”这两个出自生物学研究的概念被武断地推广到社会政治领域后带给人类的巨大灾难（如两次世界大战）是每个人都知道的。看来需要批评的不仅仅是科学本身，也包括我们如何看待科学的态度。而如何看待科学恰恰不是科学家强加给我们的。随机文章：索卡尔事件 2008-10-16对玻尔互补性概念的理解 2008-10-15图画-语言-思维 2008-09-24艺术确实在教化我们 2008-09-21作为通向真理之途的艺术品 2008-09-20收藏到：Del.icio.us
