Russian business daily Kommersant reports that oligarch Alexander Mamut’s investment company ANN acquired the largest mobile phone retailer in Russia, Euroset. At first hand, this doesn’t seem to be a web-related topic, yet I decided to report about it as it symbolizes the growing influence of oligarchs on the Russian tech scene. Financial Times zařadilo Seznam mezi posledních 5 mohykánů, kteří ve vyhledávání i po vstupu světové jedničky na najich trhy stále odolávají a drží si největší podíl na vyhledávání. Seznam 63%. Baidu (Čína) kolem 60 % Naver (Jižní Korea) 60 % Yahoo! Japan něco přes 50 % Yandex (Rusko) 43 % V době kdy se v “tech” kruzích spíše než spekuluje přímo debatuje o (co možná nejdřívějším) prodeji Seznamu, si tento nemůže přát lepší PR. Podrobnou ...

The image associated with this post is best viewed using a browser.World newspapers joined to call for the U.S. Justice Department to reject the Yahoo-Google deal yesterday, which is odd not only because the deal won't reach beyond the U.S., but also because Google isn't always the dominant search engine outside its home country. A story in today's Financial Times reminded us of this, pointing out that in China, Russia, Japan, South Korea and the ...

It is invariably funny to watch people’s reaction when I mention that in addition to having a Russian name I actually happen to work from Russia. People seem to actually want to ask if we actually have any broadband connection here. I believe this is the same for many people outside of the US working in the social media blogging or launching their own startups. And this is why I actually have to admit I ...

The Google of Russia is Yandex, and it is preparing for an IPO on Nasdaq in the fall with the hopes of raising $1.5 billion to $2 billion, reports Reuters. That would give the company a $5 billion valuation. Yandex was founded 15 years ago and the last funding I can find was only $5.3 million back in 2000, according to Quintura CEO Yakov Sadchikov (Quintura is a smaller search engine also based in Russia). ...
