This fellow has figured out a way to dip his fingers into boiling oil to retrieve morsels of food. Ram Babu, a small vendor in the busy by lines of Allahabad has been selling Pakoras for twenty years now. The fact that astonishes everyone is that though he uses his hands to take out the Pakoras from the frying pan full of boiling oil,but he has never burnt his hand. (via Arbroath)

Grocery shopping hasn't been getting any cheaper lately, and the rising costs of fresh food in particular might lead some frugal buyers to be tempted by processed foods and supposedly "cheap" snacks. The Divine Caroline blog offers some food for thought with a list of 20 foods that are real (in the Michael Pollan sense), loaded with good stuff, and less than a dollar, or, in some cases, only that much per serving. One choice ...

Yee-HAW! EFF, the ACLU and others are suing the government -- in multiple suits! -- over the new spy bill that "legalizes" warrantless bulk surveillance and immunizes the telcos from civil prosecution for their past bad deeds in cooperating with the President in wiretapping the whole nation. The ACLU contends those blanket powers to grab international communications of Americans without specific court orders violate the Fourth Amendment and would stymie journalists who often speak to ...

Salon's Patrick Smith, author of the excellent Ask the Pilot column relates the incredibly frustrating -- and quintessential -- story of the day a surly TSA screener confiscated the airline-issue, safe-certified knife from his luggage (part of his hotel stayover emergency kit): "No, this is no good. You can't take this." "Why not?" "It's serrated." He is talking about the little row of teeth along the edge. Truth be told, the knife in question, which ...

Marking a significant win over the Democrats, President Bush signed a bill into law Thursday that blesses his formerly secret, warrantless wiretapping powers and frees telecoms from privacy suits accusing them of illegally helping. HO-LY SHIT. she's beyond lucky. i wonder, how did the memory card survive? i guess what i was told year ago is true: with lightning, the voltage is so high that all the normal rules of electricity go out the window. which stands to reason, of course. if it has the power to punch through an insulator (air) that's over a mile thick, there's really no predicting what it'll do.
