Mark Cuban recently posted a commentary comparing Hulu and YouTube, coming to the conclusion that “Hulu is kicking YouTube’s Ass”. This has certainly stirred some commentary online including the response by Mark Hopkins over on Mashable where he argues that “when it comes to YouTube’s ass, Hulu couldn’t find it with both hands”. I think both sides are [...]

If you havent read, ESPN has come out and said that they will be aggressively bidding for the retransmission rights for the next available Olympics, which will be in 2016. Notice I didnt say TV rights. The battle for the Olympics rights will be in spreadsheet projections done by ESPN, NBC and probably DirecTV (my guess, not based on any info), that will have to take in to account what revenues can be generated on ...

The behavior of most email subscribers proves that the promise of email marketing is still more appealing than the actual email marketing received. Think about it. Lots of people opt in. Not many subscribers are active. The variance in those two numbers is what I call the "optimization opportunity" for your program.

The prospect of tapping the rich psychographic and behavioral profiles being generated by social network users has, for obvious reasons, set off a race among advertisers, ad networks and social networks themselves to find ever more clever ways to exploit these "target-rich" environments. In their haste to target, however, marketers have so far neglected to understand that advertising in an interactive community must proceed not by its own traditional rules but by the rules of ...

[This was just published on GigaOm]I was talking to an executive at a major label the other day. We were talking about startups and he noted that they either sue these companies out of business or legitimize them out of business. That is not far from the truth. How many legitimate, standalone digital businesses can you name that rely on licenses from the labels for their primary business and are profitable? Let’s categorize by business ...

So, you have managed to convince a VC to issue a term sheet? What next? Is it time to celebrate? Not according to VC-turned-hedge fund manager Bill Burnham, who has a post on "4 Things to Do After You Get Your First Term Sheet".Here's item 1 (emphasis mine):Get a second term sheet: It may sound flip, but this is the single most important thing you should do upon getting your 1st term sheet. This is about two companies. Or rather, about the cultures of two very successful and well known companies. As invariably happens, the culture of a company, over time, reflects the beliefs and values of the founders and impacts its performance on multiple dimensions. One company was started by a group of middle class, educated, aware, passionate individuals. The other was a traditional Indian trading company that was inherited by the foreign returned scion. Capital was scarce ...
