Amos mailed me today telling me about a new Mozilla Labs prototype Ubiquity which he called phenomenal. I was skeptical at first but this could be the killer app for Firefox. Yes that might be hard to believe but this prototype introduces a whole new level of interaction. Natural interaction that is, something that integrates itself perfectly in the work routine. Ubiquity is a Firefox prototype add-on that is similar to Launchy but located in ...

Veasey is one of the few people who know how hard it is to get a crisp x-ray of a light bulb. For starters, the object has very little mass to absorb the radiation. And because the edges of the bulb curve away from the film, the x-rays get scattered about, causing distortion. So Veasey shot this bulb in a series of 10-second bursts. The succession of blasts builds up the energy necessary to capture ...

When we interviewed Roland Sands, he drew the conclusion that motorcycles could be the “next, most logical step into two-wheeled mobility” for the fixed-gear bicycle crowd. If you had any doubt that that could be true, or don’t understand the ways in which motorcycles could be made to appeal to a demographic prepared to eschew conventional transportation wisdom in favor of something smaller, slower and less practical, we offer Julien Dupont and his freestyle trials ...

I know a lot of people really, really like The Big Lebowski, and while I enjoy the film as a whole (performances, writing etc.) I definitely don’t find it as ‘hilarious’ as most seem to. But fan or not, who could possibly resist the awesome bowling ball packaging that Universal Studios has cooked up for the 10th anniversary edition of the film? The lack of Blu-ray ...

Just over a 140 years ago, Richard Gatling’s famous multiple barrel invention became the scourge of the battlefield with its fearsome firepower and was used by colonising European powers to decimate the warriors of the non-industrialized nations they sought to conquer. Nowadays, the electrically-powered Dillon Aero M134D Minigun is taking the concept to new heights, using six barrels to fire up to 4,000 7.62 MM bullets per minute. David Campbell managed to slip evolution into the high-school science curriculum in the conservative Florida town where he teaches -- by using images of Mickey Mouse through the years to illustrate the principle: On the projector, Campbell placed slides of the cartoon icon: one at his skinny genesis in 1928, one from his 1940 turn as the impish "Sorcerer's Apprentice," and one of the rounded, ingratiating charmer of Mouse Club fame. This LA Times story (by Rosa Brooks) about the erosion of free, unstructured outdoor play and movement for kids really hits the nail on the head: little kids are just not allowed to "go outside and play" and we treat big kids who do as potential threats to be moved along as quickly as possible: But today, for most middle-class American children, "going out to play" has gone the way of the dodo, the typewriter ...

I've been noticing this for years. Parents coddle way too much here in the US. Exploration and independence was a big part of my childhood. I remember walking 7 miles to my grandmothers house when I was 10 (with my brother), along a busy road (we thought it was at the time) and the only harm was that we learned it was better to ride our bikes there. Parents...let your kids out of the backyard!

Wow. And here I have been jealous of the "structured" activities that kids get to do these days. We didn't have those when I was a kid. I had to make up my own fun playing in the yard with my siblings. Guess I did have it better not getting to do soccer or karate or dance.

From the essay, "They braved ... the rusty nails just waiting to be stepped on ..."I've stepped on a rusty nail. It's not fun. I was between 2 and 5, and stepped on the nail in my dad's study upstairs at the Providence Forge Presbyterian Church -- which is not exactly like the junkyard in /Stand By Me/.I also fell out of a "car bed" and cracked my head on the runners for the Volvo's front seat. Ironically, my parents had traded the VW Beetle for the Volvo because the Volvo was safer. Last I checked, there was no permanent damage from either injury.
