Reuters reports that Barack Obama will deliver his Thursday night acceptance speech before an “elaborate columned stage resembling a miniature Greek temple”: Conservatives are mocking the stage as a “temple of Obama.” Ed Morrissey writes, “That this scales heights of presumptuousness can hardly be refuted.” One anonymous McCain adviser quipped, “Is this from the Onion?” No, but it may be inspired by the stage at the 2008 Virginia Republican Convention: Watch some video highlights of ...

There's always triviality in politics. Namely, the nonsense which is frequently pushed by the extremes of both the Democratic and Republican parties. For example, having seen Karl Rove's "analysis" of Michelle Obama's speech last night on FOX News [see here]. There's been an incessant attempt by Republicans and conservatives to portray Michelle Obama as an angry black radical. Their disparaging remarks and grotesque commentary have become legendary among their rank-and-file. If you were uninformed, then ...

Housing in San Francisco is expensive, and one way to make units cost less is to make them smaller, particularly if there is restrictive zoning and you can get more units in the same building envelope. Now they have squeezed units down to 250 square feet, smaller than most hotel rooms. George Hauser, the architect, notes that they aren't for everyone- "It's not the last place a person might own, but a great place to ...

(Picture: the Argentine Labor Minister, Carlos Tomada, pushes a new law to fight sweatshop labor. Credit: La Nacion.) The Argentine government is pushing a new law that, they say, will help regularize the situation of workers from the textile industry. These days brands deal with workshop owners, who have an independent relationship with them and act as intermediaries with the actual workers, treated as independent contractors under a legal figure of 'home-based worker'. The new ...

A large-breasted woman flying from Oakland to Boston was accosted by the TSA when the underwire in her bra set off the magnetometer. She was given a choice: allow her breasts to be fondled or give up on flying. Instead, she raised a stink: Kates asked to see a supervisor and then the supervisor's supervisor. He told her that underwire bras were the leading item that set off the metal detectors, Kates said. If that's ...

I suppose that there's a huge disincentive for TSA agents to figure out that they could just ask her to remove the bra and go through the detector again... Most notably that this precludes getting to fondle large-breasted women.Good for her for not putting up with this crap.

Filed under: downloads hacks, peripherals hacksLess than a week after American Airlines introduced in-flight internet, hackers have already figured out how to use the system to make VoIP calls in a few easy steps with Phweet, a Twitter application. While the network blocks most VoIP services, Phweet can connect two people using a Flash app. Aircell, the company responsible for the system, is aware of the oversight, but it remains to be seen whether this ...

She is one classy woman and will make a spectacular First Lady. What a great speech. A very historic moment. You can definitely sense that. Says conservative blogger, Andrew Sullivan: One of the best, most moving, intimate, rousing, humble, and beautiful speeches I've heard from a convention platform. Maybe she should be running for president. You don't need any commentary from me. This was a home-run. And sincere. Thank God that in the end, the ...

Watching the Obama family in that adorable, unscripted moment after Michelle's speech, you can't help but be struck by the enormous gulf between the ridiculous caricature of the Obamas that Republicans have constructed and the reality of who they actually are. Can anyone who watched that still believe that Barack Obama is some sort of foreign quasi-terrorist? Or that Michelle Obama is some sort of militant black nationalist? That was a quintessentially American family up ...

Muxtape, the online service that would allow you to create playlists and share tunes with your friend was recently shut down, much to the dismay of its fans. I found 8Tracks as a worthy follower. Now, OpenTape, an open source version of Muxtape has seen the light of the day. You can download the software and run it on your own server. I have no idea who is behind this project. You can check out ...

This is a little bit genius. One of the new features of FriendFeed (a Twitter-like thingie) is "fake following". That means you can friend someone but you don't see their updates. That way, it appears that you're paying attention to them when you're really not. Just like everyone does all the time in real life to maintain their sanity. Rex calls it "most important feature in the history of social networks" and I'm inclined to ...

The Rocky Mountain News reports that the Secret Service, ATF, and the U.S. Attorney’s office are investigating a possible plot to assassinate Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL). Details of the efforts by the Denver-area police so far: Aurora police arrested a longtime drug user Sunday afternoon during a routine traffic stop where the man was seen “weaving,” sources said. Two possible other accomplices also were arrested, according to police. Police found four weapons, including two rifles ...
