For their senior design project at Arizona State University, these guys built a regenerative braking system for their bike. As they brake, the system spools up to give them a push back up to speed. They achieved 25% efficiency on one run, which isn’t too shabby. The site has all kinds of information. You can check out their different plans and ideas from before they decided on this specific layout as well as all their ...

One helpful Ubuntu hacker blogger posts a guide to getting Google Chrome working as a stand-alone app in Ubuntu, using the latest version of the Windows translator WINE and a stand-alone copy of Chrome's installer. You'll definitely need your terminal open for this one, and the result isn't exactly flawless—no https support, problems with pop-ups, and a bit slower than you'd get in Windows—but it is a neat way for dedicated Linux users to check ...

Folding screens (that occasionally useful piece of furniture, and classic movie prop) get a dab of 21st Century tech with the DID-FS from Daewoo. The old-fashioned wooden frame is there, but supplemented by four LCD widescreens, mounted vertically. That leaves you free to choose what pictures you're using to break up your living space into themes. It'll probably leave you with an empty wallet too, given current LCD prices for displays that big, but there's ...

Commuters at Liverpool's Lime Street station need only to glance at a nearby office block to bear witness to their impending doom. What they will see is a 50-foot, 40 ton spider that currently lies dormant, but it is set to "come alive" on Friday. Apparently, the spider is a component in an elaborate bit of street theater that will take place at various landmarks throughout the city—culminating in a "spectacular finish" on Sunday. The ...

Web Worker Daily highlights some sound tactics for the spare-time or full-time freelancer trying to get their paychecks to arrive in orderly fashion. The advice runs the gamut from common-sense-but-sound (get a signed contract) to a few ideas that may spark an idea. Such as this idea: Find a way to make early payments beneficial to the client. One of the things we’ve decided to implement is to give a client a 5% discount if ...

Since I already have the breast-shaped gel dispenser installed in my shower, I think I may get this 9-inch-high Nose Shower Gel to put it in my kitchen and dispense lime Jello Mello. Too bad it only exudes gel out of the right nostril, though, because it would make an excellent ketchup and mustard dispenser for just $17.95. [Potpourri via Dark Roasted Blend]

I am an architect and have been working with programs like Photoshop for years, but Spoonflower really opened up a new world for me: fabric design. It's a service that let's you upload an image to a web site and the company prints the design as a pattern on 100% cotton fabric. Their customer service is great, and I think the fabric is reasonably-priced: it costs $18/yard, not counting shipping, and an individual 8x8-inch swatch ...

The designers at Volkswagen brought out the big guns for an upcoming recreational vehicle show in Düsseldorf, Germany by crossing one of their small commercial Caddy vans with a sailboat. While the Caddy Topos Sail design is not capable of traveling on water, it does feature a sailboat style deck on the roof that can be modified for relaxation and sunbathing. It even features a wooden ladder built into the glass to grant easy access ...
