These days, any music artist looking to make a dollar is licensing their songs for use as ringtones. As the ringtone industry becomes more mature, ringtones are being used in a variety of unique ways. But Max Richter, a German-born composer based in Edinburgh, is taking the ringtone to a new level. His most recent work, 24 Postcards In Full Colour, is a collection of original songs that have been recorded for use specifically as ...

The AIGA Journal has documented a thought provoking conversation between designers Steve Portigal and Dan Soltzberg. They discuss the importance of “noticing” when going through your day. It’s a form of gathering inspiration from everywhere to fuel creative work. The key is getting out of the everyday way of thinking and seeing things with new eyes. Zen is often referenced in the discussion - and appropriately so. They advocate a kind of “waking up”, where ...

Amazon confirmed our speculation that they are planning to target colleges and universities with a new version of the Kindle, reports the Seattle PI. Textbooks are a $5.5 billion annual market, and most publishers now offer electronic versions of their textbooks. McGraw-Hill Education, for example, publishes 95% of their books electronically as well as in print. But there is no compelling device to read them on. The new Kindle will likely be a large screen ...

The opportunity to buy digital copies of my textbooks would be fantastic. I wouldn't have to lug around those tomes from class to class anymore. Man, would that be nice.

It’s not entirely clear why the Muxtape site is down at the moment. A cryptic message mentions a “problem” with the RIAA, with no further detail. Kind of strange, considering that the online mix tape making site allows you to listen to music, not download it. Tools like these probably drive up music sales. Hopefully it’s just some sort of mix up, and the RIAA will back off. [via LAist]

In yesterday's jazz post I mentioned Ken Burns, one of my favorite documentary film makers and storytellers of our time. He is perhaps most famous to many people for the "Ken Burns effect," a technique for adding motion to still photography. In this technique life is given to a photo by slowly panning or zooming in or out to give emphasis or create drama, etc. Burns learned the technique from his mentor in the '70s ...

If you’re wondering what to do tonight, I suggest you run, don’t walk to see the film Man On Wire. In 1974 a young Frenchman named Philippe Petit illegally rigged a wire between New York’s Twin Towers, which were at the time the world’s largest buildings. This beautiful film narrates Petit’s incredible talent of wire walking and the incredible planning which took six and a half years to turn a dream into a reality. Much ...
