Image hosting is the kind of service many people use for sharing their images. There are several great options that cost money—like SmugMug, for instance—but unless you're a major shutterbug, a free service might fit your modest needs and usage pattern better. Here we round up three of the top options for free image hosting around the Web—Flickr, Picasa, and Photobucket. Read the comments on this post

Water-scraper is a concept piece entered into the eVoIo Skyscraper Competition which shows a future where people live and work underwater. Harnessing wave, wind and solar power to generate electricity, it's a future world I'd be thrilled to live in. We'd also be able to grow food using aquaculture and hydroponic ways—though if it just tastes like algae I might stick with city-living for a while longer. [Water-scraper via Inhabitat]

Did you know that blocking ads truly hurts the websites you visit? We recently learned that many of our readers did not know this, so I'm going to explain why. There is an oft-stated misconception that if a user never clicks on ads, then blocking them won't hurt a site financially. This is wrong. Most sites, at least sites the size of ours, are paid on a per view basis. If you have an ad ...

So, the question is, do we block ads because it's a lame way to get revenue? Or stop visiting sites that do poor in-your-face-lets-trick-them advertising?google ads have trained me to do the latter, but how much is content worth to the viewers? They've gotta survive somehow...

My rule of thumb is that I don't mind ads if they are static on load and don't cover content. I will stay away from your site if you have ads that autoplay with audio and video when I want to read an article.

This is part of why I don't specifically block ads. I let NoScript take care of the really annoying flash and javascript stuff, and it usually keeps most pop-ups at bay, too. If you run pop-ups, I will usually refuse to visit your site.

Apart from a colossal tsunami, here's another effect of the 66.6 exajoules liberated by this weekend's earthquake in Chile: NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory says that days will now be shorter because the quake shifted Earth's axis by three inches. The change—which can only be measured thanks to computer models—will result in days that are 1.26 microseconds shorter than before. There may have been more visible changes, like islands changing its position. One of them, Santa ...

I spend a prodigious amount of time reading on my iPhone. Half the apps on my iPhone’s Home screen alone involve reading as a predominant, if not exclusive, feature. Mail, Messages, Safari, Tweetie, Instapaper Pro, Simplenote, and Reeder: these are my most-used apps, and each one is used for reading in some way or another.
