When it's finished in ten years, Dubai's latest architectural monolith will be the tallest skyscraper in the world. At more than one kilometer high (3,280 feet), the Nakheel Tower will have the hundred floors. "From our perspective, we are building a tower that's going to be over a kilometre in height. This is a complete iconic development. It may be the tallest." [Daily Telegraph]

So, Congress finally passed the bailout bill. You know about the Treasury's newfound $700 billion, and you've heard about the snipped golden parachutes, but what does the 451-page week-old shotgun savior of a bill actually mean for you? Your 401k Should Stop Free Falling The bill was heralded as a way to calm the markets following the 778-point mini-crash the day after the original bill failed. That plan hasn't exactly worked. But! If the bill ...

You're standing around the water cooler chatting with your co-workers, and someone makes a racist (sexist, homophobic, or otherwise stereotype-based) joke. What do you do? Call him or her out on it and risk your work relationship? Don't say a thing (and imply that it's ok)? Over at the Brazen Careerist blog, race and culture consultant Carmen Van Kerckhove says: My recommendation? Play dumb. Put on a bewildered expression, act as if you don't understand ...

I do something similar to this. I ask them to explain the joke, but in a slightly more confrontational way. "What do you mean by that? What are you trying to say?"

Everybody has a digital photo frame these days. Even at 32 inches, they impress no one. So keep your eyes out for the next trend, which we humbly suggest could be non-digital photo frames. Making a brief appearance around the turn of the century, these frames accepted one analog picture but were able to run without a source of power (AC adapter or solar) indefinitely. Now if only scientists could learn to harness this non-digital ...

Surprise! Wells Fargo is buying Wachovia, even though Citibank said at the beginning of the week that it was going to. (Check out the full post here.) Unlike Citibank, Wells Fargo will absorb all parts of Wachovia, including its securities and retail brokerage biz, in a "$15.1 billion all-stock merger." [DealBook] (Thanks to Stephen!)

Nintendo has confirmed the existence of their rumored pedometer with the release of a Wii Fit meets Brain Training meets Nike+ game. Your Life Rhythm, as it is called, uses the little pod to record your physical performance, and it looks a bit weird to me. But then, I don't have a clue of Japanese. [Kotaku]

With credit tightening and consumer confidence shaky, you know this is going to be a tough year for holiday sales. A forecast that came out this morning from Lehman Brothers (now Barclays Capital), puts Internet sales over the upcoming holiday season growing at just 8 percent, compared to 19 percent growth last year (and 26 percent in 2006). That’s still better than the one percent growth in holiday ales expected at physical department stores, but ...

I know it's very esoteric and all, but I (and tons of other CEATEC 2008 attendees) really loved Panasonic's super-futuristic LiveWall prototype. What you can see in the videos below is a wall-sized screen (LifeWall) that detects users anywhere they go in the room it's installed in through face recognition. AT CES, Panasonic called this concept "You-know-me-TV" and "Stay-with-me-TV", respectively, which sounds kind of creepy. Users operate the LifeWall by arm motions, much like Tom ...

In the arms race to squeeze more pundits with more laptops into a single stage, CNN has always held the lead. They're for keeping an up-to-the-second finger on the blogosphere's pulse, receiving sordid tips from 21st-century Deep Throats, yes? Tell that to CNN's legal analyst Jeffrey Toobin—what you up to on that screen there, Jeff? Yeah, just watchin' a little pitch-by-pitch playoff baseball. Despite being from NYC, looks like Toobin had to keep watch of ...
