It's all over: Years of planning, hours of speech-writing, millions spent on creating the venues to host thousands of Democratic and Republican convention attendees. What remains are the words that the politicians spoke (or didn't,) and the promises they made. To re-cap those words, we thought we'd create a Wordle gallery of the most notable candidates', spouses', and supporters' speeches. Wordle is an online application created by IBM's senior software engineer Jonathan Feinberg. Using text ...

It's good to know that the Heavy appreciates a good sandwich as much as I do. Though in my case my need for hunger-filling sammiches pushes me to hire interns in the Denver area. In the case of the Heavy? He uses his Sandvich to satisfy overwhelming hunger pangs and heal 120 health. The tidy meal does take him a good four seconds to eat, and apparently the noise of his chomping is a dead ...

A small addition to your shower head can save you time, money, and water: a simple shutoff valve can toggle the water flow off and on without undoing your carefully-calibrated mix of hot and cold on the faucet itself. When you want to save water (and money on your water bill), you can quick switch off the water while you soap up or leave conditioner in using a shower head shutoff valve. Last summer we ...

New technologies tend to follow different trajectories of hype, hope, and despair as they are discovered by different groups of people and finally adopted (or ignored) by consumers. Gartner actually goes ahead and charts this hype cycle for different technologies. Its latest hype cycle for 2008, shown above, is making the rounds. (It was released in July, but is just now reaching the upward trajectory in its own cycle). According to Gartner’s view of the ...

Great graphic. I sometimes fear coming across as either an apologist or a groupie for virtual worlds, but when a technology falls into "trough of disillusionment," it's usually the last opportunity for established players to apply the new technology to create differentiated advantage. It will be very interesting to watch Green IT follow this same curve.

So the questions is - where exactly in the hype cycle is it best to start a company built around a technology? I'd have to argue for the trough of disillusionment so you can lead the enlightenment.

True, this mod could have been done with pretty much any small plastic box, but choosing a Nintendo Entertainment System to house a retro gaming PC is the kind of crowd pleasing coup-de-modding that is difficult to surpass, save by hollowing out a Vectrex or performing electronic taxidermy on an actual anthropomorphic hedgehog. The beast contains a Windows XP PC loaded with the GameEx emulator front-end and a metric shedload of NES, SNES and N64 ...

Todd Lappin was invited to take a demo flight of the Emirates A380. He took a bunch of photos and wrote about it on his blog, Telstar Logistics. It was the kind of offer Telstar Logistics cannot refuse: "Please join us for an exclusive opportunity to experience and fly on Emirates’ cutting-edge A380 aircraft during a two hour ‘demo flight’ and reception," they said. So we said, "Sure! Sign us up!" And away we went. ...

Gear and derailleur mechanisms in high-end bikes are among the more impressive feats of engineering around, which makes bike madman Eric Hagerman's report in Wired on Shimano's new ultra high-end all-electric gear shifters pretty interesting. While other companies have dabbled in replacing rickety lever and cable shifters with all-electric mechanisms, Shimano has taken the tech much further than most. And while it may seem like bike-dude geekery at best, hearing the pros talk about the ...
