It seems like just yesterday Firefox 3.0 was released, and here we sit with the first Alpha release of Firefox 3.1 in our lap. This new release is supposed to reach final form towards the end of the year, but until that time comes there will be plenty of pre-release versions (like this one) that you can tinker with. So what’s new in Firefox 3.1 Alpha 1? The two major things we’ve already uncovered, and ...

You may find this simple tip handy if you always have a web browser running on your desktop screen in maximized mode. There are instances when you need to access program shortcuts and files placed on the desktop. Now instead of minimizing the browser to access these files, you can simple create a shortcut in the bookmarks toolbar of your browser that points to the desktop folder. Click this bookmark and you’ll be able to ...

Google Bookmarks is sporting a new look and feel, boasting a quicker interface and an "infinite scrolling" feature that dynamically retrieves more bookmarks when you reach the end of your list (kind of like Google Reader). The new interface has moved Bookmarks to the confines of Google Notebook and is being called "a better way to organize your bookmarks" on the old Google Bookmarks home page. Google Operating System notes that old Google Bookmarks features—like ...

Never looked into Google Bookmarks before, as I use Foxmarks to synchronise across multiple Firefox browsers. However, after trying Del.icio.us today, and realising how much work it is to share (can't seem to multiple select) my imports, maybe Google Bookmarks is worth a look - especially as I use Notebook.

This would be great if there was a way to import from del.icio.us - but as is, I can't imagine trying to switch.

Google added a new feature to Gmail to always use a secure (https) connection. Switch to the settings/ general tab and scroll down to “Browser connection” to see if you got it already (if not, it may still be rolled out for you). While safer, Google in their blog announcement of this also notes it may slow down your Gmail a bit. [Thanks Mrrix32!] [By Philipp Lenssen | Origin: A Safer Gmail With Https | ...

Filed under: Software, iPhone, App StoreFileMagnet (mentioned briefly by Dave in his iPhone apps I actually use post yesterday) is a low-cost wireless file transfer tool for iPhone and iPod Touch. It requires you to install a companion desktop application, also called FileMagnet, which acts as the conduit for file transfer. Usage is simple enough: drag files you wish to copy into the desktop app's window. Then open FileMagnet on the iPhone, and as long ...

A few weeks ago we wrote about a new feature, walking directions, that select people were seeing when using Google Maps. The good news is that Google has apparently unleashed the new feature for anyone that wants to use it, and from what I can tell it works pretty darn good. When you are getting directions on the Google Maps page you should notice that there are “By car” and “Walking” options located immediately above ...

There are a lot of great applications that are coming through Apple’s App Store for both the iPhone and iPod Touch, but one of my new favorites would have to be the 100% free WordPress for iPhone. You might recall that TypePad users have had a blogging tool since day 1 of the App Store launch, and that program was also “free.” The catch, however, was that you are required to have a paid subscription ...

WordPress for the iPhone is done and has been uploaded to the iTunes App Store for approval, according to the WordPress for iPhone blog. While there is no set time for release, it could be as early as tonight. With this announcement, WordPress becomes the second company (TypePad was the first) to offer a dedicated blogging app for the iPhone and iPod Touch. If you watch the video at the bottom you’ll see that WordPress ...

Google Documents has added a fullscreen editing mode to the "View" menu on individual documents, a convenience previously available only through a Greasemonkey script. Combined with Firefox 3's serious fullscreen capabilities and GDocs' fixed-width page view, it lets one turn the online office suite a no-distraction writing environment—provided you can resist popping open another tab with Ctrl+T. It's worth noting that Zoho Writer has a similar "Maximize editor" function, but it's not as severe as ...

Update 2: Just uploaded a new version that includes the ability to drag and drop a bit.ly URL and get a Pie chart with the source information. Done with the experiment. Took me ~3 hours to do the whole thing. It isn’t pretty, but I think it’s semi-useful for me and I learned a limitation of AIR (no drag and drop to the dock). This version also includes some bad AS3 parsing code and classes ...

When I initially wrote about Plurk, I noted that while it was a great service, I don’t see it gaining too much traction because of its similarity to Twitter which seems to be in that comfy spot where no one really wants to switch to another service, whatever novelties it may bring. Fast forward one month, and Plurk seems to be doing mighty fine, with a lot of enthusiastic users plurking all day long. And, ...

The URL shortening service TinyURL was first useful for sending longer URLs to friends over e-mail to avoid line breaks that would often disable links in many e-mail programs. With the advent and massive growth of SMS and microblogging services, like Twitter, TinyURL and other services like it have become omnipresent, an integral part of sharing blog posts, news, and other items. In fact, Steve Gillmor of TechCrunch recently wrote, "Who controls TinyURL... controls the high ground ...
