A short while back, I did a brief series on the value of "dirty data"---copious amounts of unstructured, non-relational data created by the many interactions user have with your site and each other.ReadWriteWeb has a post up about Four Ad-Free Ways that Mined Data Can Make Money, along very similar lines. Well worth a read.Shared by Ken Kennedy (11)Contribute comment -

World Bank data now available through APIs (7)

By way of David Stephenson I’ve learned that the World Bank now offers an API for several of its data sets on development, governance, and business conditions, plus a collection of photos. Here are the indicators you can explore, for many countries, going back to about 1960 (though the data are sparse in some cases): Agricultural land (% of land area) Forest area (% of land area) Surface area (sq. km) Foreign direct investment, net ...Shared by Javed (138) Ken Kennedy (11) Kin (23) Mark (16) mndoci (54) Patrick (19) ScorpFromHell (11)- mndoci said: We want more data ... never enough :)

I’ve received more than the usual amount of criticism for my recent opinion piece on Sarah Palin, most of it alleging sexism and/or an unseemly infatuation with Barack Obama. For those who care, I’d like to briefly respond:- Ken said: "Needless to say, I find Obama’s religious pandering repulsive. The suspicion that he is pandering, out of obvious necessity, and not quite as religious as he makes out, is somewhat comforting, however. But even if Obama were precisely as religious as he appears, he is not a Creationist, Rapture-Ready blockhead. Palin, by all appearances, seems to be one. This is a difference worth noting. Whatever you may think of his politics, Obama is very intelligent and reasonably well educated. Palin thinks the universe is 6000 years old"

If They Win, Palin Stands Good Chance of Becoming President (12)

No one wants an average neurosurgeon or even an average carpenter, but when it comes time to vest a man or woman with more power and responsibility than any person has held in human history, Americans say they want a regular guy, someone just like themselves. Cheap CAPTCHA Solving Changes the Security Game (3)

Freedom to Tinker (16) permalink
ZDNet’s “Zero Day” blog has an interesting post on the gray-market economy in solving CAPTCHAs. CAPTCHAs are those online tests that ask you to type in a sequence of characters from a hard-to-read image. By doing this, you prove that you’re a real person and not an automated bot — the assumption being that bots cannot decipher the CAPTCHA images reliably. The goal of CAPTCHAs is to raise the price of access to a resource, ...- Ken Kennedy said: Ed Felton explores some interesting points here. Would you spend $0.25 a year (yes, a quarter) to avoid CAPTCHAs? Should you be able to?

A journalist friend of mine once said about Google "they are a freak of a company, the best advertising business ever built is funding the largest collection of mad scientists ever assembled".
