Organizations will work tirelessly to de-personalize every communication medium they encounter. Radio ads used to be live, personal and spoken by an individual.TV ads used to feature actual people, demonstrating something, usually live.Phone calls involved a live speaker, talking, with permission, to another person.Email used to be honest interactions between consenting adults.Facebook pages (and Wikipedia, too) were built by people, not staffs.Twits came from real people, and so did instant messages. One by one, the ...

The Digital Journalist has launched a photo blog modeled after The Big Picture. Well done. I've followed this site on and off for years but always found it too difficult to navigate through to find the photography, which is shot by top-notch photojournalists and is amazing. Nice to see the photography put front and center. Case in point: this wonderful selection of sports photos by Walter Iooss Jr., punctuated by stories of the athletes he ...

"The Big Picture", uno de los mejores blogs creados últimamente (e, increíblemente, uno de los más simples en concepto y ejecución) ha creado una nueva moda de photo blog que está siendo cada vez más el patrón a seguir por otros (y bien que hacen). Digital Journalist y Wall Street Journal estrenan sus propias versiones y todos nos beneficiamos.

Olympic mascot! NBC totally blew the Olympics. softball loss A world-wide event. One of the last global touchstone events left and NBC treated it as some sort of private party. There was no reason not to stream every event live online. CBS had already shown everyone how to handle big time sports events. The fact that NBC didn’t just shows their complete ineptitude at understanding today’s audience. Jones was leading the race when she tripped ...

I’m a big fan of swearing. Not in the derogatory, directed-at-you kind of way (“hey, fuck you!”), but as verbal marker to underline key concepts, create emphasis, and express passion. It certainly doesn’t work in every environment nor should it, but there are plenty were it does. The first place where I’ve found it to be useful is between coworkers (“fuck, that’s awesome”). A team of British researchers found a while ago that profanity at ...

Like the passing of James Brown, Curtis Mayfield or Ray Charles, it is hard to fully grasp the enormity of what has been lost with this weekend's death of Isaac Hayes. The baritone giant will forever be linked with Shaft, for better or for worse, but as critically and commercially important that was in Hayes' long career, it is just one tiny fragment of his overall contributions to R&B and soul music. Hayes was much ...

As technology continues on its upward trajectory, designers occasionally grow nostalgic for simpler forms. Consumers also want the basic aesthetics of yesterday, without sacrificing the technological advances of today. One way to get the best of both worlds is wood-based electronics. Whether for the eco-minded, who prefer it to non-biodegradable plastic, or for pure classicists who are charmed by its timelessness, the wooden form is at once visually striking and practical. Here are some of ...
