As I noted (to much derision from the peanut gallery) back in August, Tina Fey bears a striking resemblance to Vice Presidential Candidate Sarah Palin. It seemed like an innocuous observation to me - they both looked pretty similar to me. Vindication from comments like “you are trashing the site with the political drivel” came several weeks later when Tina Fey appeared on Saturday Night Live impersonating the political candidate. The skit was subject to ...

Speaking of The New Yorker’s endorsement of Barack Obama, here’s the story behind the cover for this week’s issue by Bob Staake. According to Mark Frauenfelder at Boing Boing, Staake still uses an old version of Adobe Photoshop 3.0 running in Classic. I’m actually less surprised that he uses such old software than I am that he uses Photoshop instead of Illustrator. ★

It is no secret that there has been a major shift towards UAVs for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. With big contracts on the line, researchers are scrambling to come up with the next big breakthrough in unmanned military technology. One group of researchers believes that the "next big thing" could be a dinosaur (or "flying reptile" if you want to be all accurate about it) that existed 115 million years ago. These scientists ...

This is the actual Mac plus that Scotty tried talking to in Star Trek IV, spotted and photographed by Marcin Wichary at the Star Trek: The Experience exhibition shortly before it closed last month. Note how shiny and clean this particular Plus is. Bet it boots up shiny and clean, too. And if it has problems, it can run a Level One Diagnostic. Now that the Experience has left the Las Vegas Hilton, it has ...

Google has rolled out their new interface design to the last of the Google Docs trio, Spreadsheets (presentations and Documents already had this new style). The tabs are replaced by an application menu. Google had announced this change last week; in the announcement they said that these changes would also allow them to have room to add more features and that users should “Stay tuned.” [Thanks Hebbet and Avrohom Eliezer Friedman!] [By Philipp Lenssen | ...

Image by lodev via Flickr Maybe it’s a perk of being consistently named among the most influential people of one’s era. Perhaps it’s bravado borne of having put a ding in the universe. Whatever it is, Steve Jobs seems to think nothing of driving a car without license plates and parking in handicapped parking spaces, as the picture above, captured on September 30th by Flickr user lodev shows. The pic is but the latest in ...

Just called Steve Dowling to ask him about this photo that’s flying around the Interwebs which supposedly shows Steve Jobs in a bit of distress after flying over the handlebars of his bicycle. The story broke on CNN and then was picked up by Reuters, TechCrunch, Silicon Alley Insider, AllThingsD, VentureBeat, GigaOm and Valleywag. “It’s not true,” Dowling said. I said, which part isn’t true? The part about him falling off his bike or the ...

Filed under: Software, iPhone, iPod touchForbes is reporting that the iPhone has become the country's top eBook reader. The claim is based upon the number of downloads of Stanza [App Store link], an ebook reader for the iPhone and iPod touch (395,000 and counting), versus the number of projected US Kindle sales (380,000). For those unfamiliar with Stanza, it's a free application that lets users download books over the air, as does the Kindle. All ...

Maybe you’ve heard about this already. CNN briefly ran a report this morning that Dear Leader suffered a heart attack and was rushed to the hospital. Katie Cotton says it’s not true. See the whole thing here. Apparently it was a citizen journalist site and it looks like they got punked. Or is it pwned? I can’t remember what the kids are saying these days. Suspicion is short-sellers doing this to tank the stock. Which ...

I don’t know about you but my favorite corporate blogger is now Brent from Netflix - or as I like to call him - “The Bringer of Good News.” Netflix announced on Wednesday the addition of 1,000 movies to its “Watch Instantly” collection, which on its own is a welcomed announcement.
