It seems like the stars are aligning for that rumored MacBook intro event on October 14. Nvidia, which was supposed to launch their MCP7A chipset on September 30, has announced the chipset will actually be available right after the alleged Apple event. Apparently, the new chipset—which is rumored to be part of the new MacBooks—bests Intel's own G45 in the graphics and audio department. The built-in audio and video capabilities in the new Nvidia chipset ...

I'm not the type to get joy out of someone else's misfortune. Over the years Jack Thompson and I have built up a rapport of sorts, but that's bound to happen when you email with a person for upwards of four years. While Thompson tends to go off the deep end, and off on me, whenever I've tried to get into a deep conversation with him or do a standard interview, I still find his ...

Pulitzer Prize-winning photographer Vincent Laforet was one of the first people to get his hands on the most coveted camera on the planet, Canon's 5D Mark II. He talked to us a bit about the breakneck stills-and-video shoot he put together in just a few hours to see what this camera can really do. You can catch a glimpse of the incredible results here and why Laforet says that it's the "best camera ever" that ...

Back when the latest iteration of Foxtel's iQ launched, one of the most interesting aspects was that there was a 4th HD digital tuner inside, except it was just lying there like some kind of fairytale princess waiting to be woken up by a digital Prince Charming. Well, the good news is that the digital prince will be rolling out to iQ2 boxes around the country starting next week to activate the sleeping 4th tuner. ...

Not to worry, Daring Fireball's John Gruber says according to the standard "sources familiar with Apple's hardware plans" that its "Let's MacBook" event will happen on Oct. 14. While he doesn't get specific what the new hardware will be, the heavily favored are new MacBooks clad in aluminum (peace out white), and new MacBook Pros, both ...

I'm reading and re-reading a NYT Magazine piece that explores ambient telepresence, as made mundane by Twitter, Facebook, AIM, and the like. The writer, Clive Thompson, really nailed a number of things I've been struggling to put into words for years. It's a terrific read. This is the paradox of ambient awareness. Each little update — each individual bit of social information — is insignificant on its own, even supremely mundane. But taken together, over ...

this is why having a personal [and appropriately-pruned] twitterverse is essential to life in 2008. it's what twitter is for, but it's so hard to explain that you can't condense it down when some noob asks "what's the point of twitter?"
