Up until now, I had never heard of Aussie indy-rocker Josh Pyke. However, sailing the seas on a giant guitar is something that tends to get people noticed. The boat is prominently featured in the video for his new single Make You Happy, and it appears to be an accurate replica of his favorite guitar. Unfortunately, it is not an actual, playable instrument—which is just as well. Jamming on this thing would require far too ...

People really want to believe effort is a myth, at least if we consider what we consume in the media: politicians and beauty queens who get by on a smile and a wink lottery winners who turn a lifetime of lousy jobs into one big payday sports stars who are born with skills we could never hope to acquire hollywood celebrities with the talent of being in the right place at the right time failed ...

Very interesting take. For the most part I have to think that even the people that we consider "lucky" still had to expend effort in some way to get there. You don't get to be a CEO, even a failed one, without putting in work. Same with a beauty queen, actor, or athlete. Lottery winners are really the exception IMO.

A year ago, we predicted that the iPhone would soon have 1% of the browser market share, if Apple met its sales goals. It not only appears to be doing that, but the iPhone is an unqualified hit: The iPhone’s browser share was up 58% last month. 30 percent of U.S. consumers who purchased Apple’s new iPhone 3G from June through August 2008 switched from other mobile carriers to join AT&T. Nearly half (47 percent) ...

Monday, 8:23pm Reno, NV “May I have the envelope, please…” Howdy, A very big “Thank You” to everyone who sent in a response to last week’s query. The rather large number of well-thought-out, specific answers in the comment section was augmented by another pile of responses sent to my private inbox. I’m truly humbled, guys. That was a deluge of good stuff. The question I’d asked last Thursday was (more or less): What’s keeping you ...

Photo sharing site Flickr just activated an iPhone-scaled version of the site for anyone visiting the site with a mobile Safari browser. The menus are optimized to put the most-accessed activities—photo stream browsing, "Explore" mode, and recent comment activity—right up front, and your upload-by-email address is placed in the "More" section. Best of all, Flickr's site pre-loads many of the iPhone-scaled thumbnails you're checking out, so flipping between pictures often doesn't require any kind of ...

Exposure is a nice app for viewing Flickr photos on the iPhone. I'm still looking for a decent app to upload photos though. Not happy with the few I've seen because they don't allow me to upload photos private and/or don't allow greater customization with tags and titles.

Bruce Springsteen - “Thunder Road” (Live, 1975) At Hammersmith Odeon, London ‘75. The last verse of this song — particularly in this performance — has become one of my favorite things ever. There were ghosts in the eyes Of all the boys you sent away. They haunt this dusty beach road In the skeleton frames of burned-out Chevrolets. They scream your name at night in the street! Your graduation gown lies in rags at their ...

"Dear Henry" certainly generated passionate comments. Here's another marketing thought: If people want the House to pass the bailout, all they'd have to ask is, "Do you want China and Abu Dhabi to come in and buy America at fire sale prices?" The bill would pass by this weekend. It's all about framing.

MobaTalk is an experiment from Michael Baily that he calls “Video Twitter.” Here’s the alpha testing page where you can see all of the video tweets being recorded right now. The cool thing is that you don’t even have to sign up or join his service and there’s nothing to download or install. All you need is a webcam, a Twitter account, and a dream. Okay, maybe not the dream part so much. The video ...

From an interview on CNBC. I’ve argued this kind of thing myself - here (pdf). BUFFETT: What you have, Joe, you have all the major institutions in the world trying to deleverage. And we want them to deleverage, but they’re trying to deleverage at the same time. Well, if huge institutions are trying to deleverage, you need someone in the world that’s willing to leverage up. And there’s no one that can leverage up except ...
