Here's an Internet oldie but goodie shipped directly from Japan. Don't worry, anti-GMO types, these watermelons didn't have their DNA tinkered in any way—they derive their unique cuboid shape from the tempered glass boxes the farmers grow them in. While they may appear little more than novelties, square watermelons serve a more practical purpose: They save space during packing and storage, for one, which means less fuel can be used during transport. Plus, watermelon lovers ...

Dr Sabine Begall and colleagues from the University of Duisburg-Essen have discovered that cows tend to point north. The researchers studied deer in the Czech Republic and looked at thousands of images of cattle on Google Earth. The animals tended to face north when eating or resting. "We conclude that the magnetic field is the only common and most likely factor responsible for the observed alignment," the scientists wrote in an article. I guess cows ...

Rodney of Reachd gives three really good reasons for loving Viddler, and I have to say that they are three of my favorite reasons as well. Thanks to Rodney for a great video (with lots of fun video tricks) explaining why Viddler is really worth looking into. If you know someone who’s looking at picking a video site for their content, a link to Rodney’s video really highlights some of the best reasons why Viddler ...

I haven’t posted about the GAPS diet in a while. We are still on it. It’s been over 3 months now. GAPS stands for Gut and Psychology Syndrome, a book by Dr. Natasha Campbell-McBride, MD. She is a pediatrician in England who is reversing autism, allergies, and other disorders in children in her practice. Three months on the diet and Seth is happier and more easygoing than I’ve ever known him to be. His anxiety ...

Seth Godin wrote today that ads are the new online tip jar. “If you like what you’re reading, click an ad to say thanks,” he says. On the surface, this seems like a nice gesture. Underneath, however, it’s a bad idea. When people ask me how they can support Get Rich Slowly, I intentionally steer them clear of clicking on ads. Sure, I get a nickel or a dime or a quarter every time somebody ...

I agree with both sides on this one. I don't think Seth was suggesting to willy-nilly click a bunch of ads. If YOU put up ads YOU believe in and find helpful, then your readers might find them useful, too, and if they click and become customers, everybody wins.

Last Thursday, at the New Media Expo in Las Vegas, Nevada - during the keynote address, Gary Vaynerchuk (friend: garyvaynerchuk) of WineLibrary TV (subscribe: winelibrarytv) asked: “When your YouTube video goes viral, whose brand are you promoting?”. The entire audience answered aloud: “YouTube’s”. Not anymore. Viddler’s new customizable player is changing the way the world thinks about embeddable video on the Web. I’m a big fan of swearing. Not in the derogatory, directed-at-you kind of way (“hey, fuck you!”), but as verbal marker to underline key concepts, create emphasis, and express passion. It certainly doesn’t work in every environment nor should it, but there are plenty were it does. The first place where I’ve found it to be useful is between coworkers (“fuck, that’s awesome”). A team of British researchers found a while ago that profanity at ...

It seems that there are always numerous stories floating around that manifest the great dangers a society faces when it has rejected sound, classical philosophy. Modern philosophy, with its foundation in Cartesian doubt, has left the average person who has thought about it with the impression that philosophy is to be equated with sophism. Modern philosophy has also undermined our ability to any longer distinguish right from wrong. For centuries the Christian ethos in the ...

YOUR CONGRESS AT WORK ON THE HOUSING CRISIS: First Rep. Laura Richardson was having problems making house payments, defaulting six times over eight years. Then after a bank foreclosed on her Sacramento house and sold it at auction in May, the Long Beach Democrat made such a stink that Washington Mutual, in an unusual move, grabbed it back and returned it to her. This week, in the latest chapter in the housing saga, the Code ...

The pizza at Di Fara Pizza on Avenue J in Midwood, Brooklyn is amazing (among the best in NYC). Owner Domenico DeMarco has run the place for over 40 years and makes each pie by hand.
