Today we would like to announce that WebKit is the first browser engine to fully pass Acid3. A while back, we posted that we scored 100/100 and matched the reference rendering. Now, thanks to recent speedups in JavaScript, DOM and rendering, we have passed the third condition, smooth animation on reference hardware. Here is a screenshot of a successful run: Here is the timing reference dialog you get by clicking on the “A” in Acid3 ...

Stephen Coles: I submit that the reason the interrobang didn’t catch on is due mostly to its design. The smashing of straight and curved vertical strokes atop each other is hardly a graceful combination, and it gets especially messy at text sizes (‽). Were it drawn more thoughtfully like those of Christian Schwartz’s Amplitude and Fritz, the interrobang might be part of our standard punctuation today, a member of the basic Latin character set, and ...

Filmmaker and animator David O'Reilly (who came up with the concept for iHologram) has noticed an interesting property in this animated GIF: He writes: While working in 3D last year, I discovered this optical illusion: A large grid seen rotating at a certain speed will appear to group itself into smaller grids, spinning independently. See O'Reilly's website for more examples (and his theory on why this happens). For more optical illusions, watch Al Seckel's TEDTalk ...

If you’ve ever collaborated with other people on a project, you know the frustration of constantly swapping files. Some do it by email, some through file upload services and some by other methods. It’s a pain in the neck, and every designer and developer knows it. Revision control is an excellent way to combat the problem of sharing files between workers. Most web-developers have probably worked with some sort of revision control system, but designers ...

By Caitlin Fitzsimmons: Reuters has become the first news organisation to build a presence on news prediction web startup Hubdub. Hubdub, which is based in Edinburgh but has a mainly US audience, lets users make predictions and bet with virtual money on the outcome of news events. Previously its only partnership with a news organisation was the Huffington Post, which syndicates some Hubdub content on its own site. The Reuters section within Hubdub will allow ...

This was to be expected after Amazon's (NSDQ: AMZN) S3 storage service and EC2 on-demand computing service already leading the way in cloud computing. Now it is launching a content delivery network later this year, that will take on the likes of big incumbents like Akamai (NSDQ: AKAM) and Limelight and also the slew of starts that have gotten funding over the last two years. As to what differentiation the book giant will have besides ...

Joost just soft-launched its long-awaited in-browser version. It's throwing several errors (see the red bar in the screen grab) and crashed my browser eight times in a row but, with perseverance, I managed to watch Amy Winehouse buy burgers at a McDonalds drive-thru and an episode of Transformers. This version requires a small proprietary app, "JoostHelper", be installed - a bit of a drag, since Joost requires both the plugin and Adobe (NSDQ: ADBE) Flash, ...

Providing online Programme support has a long history at the BBC. Tom Coates (now with Yahoo! Brickhouse) announced the launch of the Radio 3 website in 2004. Then Gavin Bell (now with Nature), Matt Biddulph (Dopplr’s peripatetic CTO) and Tom spoke [pdf] about Programme Information Pages (or PIPs) back in 2005 at ETech. At the time it was hoped that PIPs would be rolled out to all BBC programmes so that every programme the BBC ...
