New Miayzaki film (2)
on Cartoon Brew: Leading the Animation Conversation (59) permalinkHayao Miyazaki’s latest feature, Ponyo On The Cliff, opened yesterday in Japan. It’s one of his gentler films, more along the lines of My Neighbor Totoro - and I’m looking forward to it. Not wild about the theme song on the trailer, but the visuals look terrific. Maybe Normalizing Isn't Normal (153)
on Coding Horror (953) permalinkOne of the items we're struggling with now on Stack Overflow is how to maintain near-instantaneous performance levels in a relational database as the amount of data increases. More specifically, how to scale our tagging system. Traditional database design principles tell you that well-designed databases are always normalized, but I'm not so sure. - Roberto said: Just took a Database class this year as a 2nd year undergrad. Normalization came up. Perforamce considerations in nomalzation came up twice, briefly. In any case, databases are hard enough without having to extensivly nomralize and then retrive via multiple joins.
- tosh said: interesting
- lishevita said: On my current project, and the last couple of projects I've worked on, I've had questions about how best to deal with exactly these issues. I'm not a database specialist, It's just something I do as part of the bigger picture of Web application development, but when I first learned to use databases in Web applications, I learned to ALWAYS NORMALIZE, so that is, by and large, how I design apps today. In really big apps, though, I've also wondered if this isn't more problematic than it's worth. It just doesn't scale well past a certain point. I like the fact that this article supports my gut intuition that it makes sense to hybridize the design of a database -- part normalized and part denormalized -- based on actual data usage.
- wayne a arthurton said: Interesting take on Normalization in databases.
- Dom Derrien said: Read this article with a wider mind: it's not just a matter of always normalizing databases, it's related of following rules because someone taught them! Be pragmatic, not purist ;)
- JonB said: pull quote: As the old adage goes, normalize until it hurts, denormalize until it works.
