The folly of limiting the number of slides (2)

It happened again last week. Someone approached me after a seminar and asked how I would remake some slides they were presenting. He is a medical researcher and his presentation is 10-20 minutes long. He showed me one slide and it was packed with information. I asked why it wasn't multiple slides since they were at least four key points being made. He said it was because the organization limits him to 25 slides, so ...

This is great advice. One point per slide is the best rule. The number of slides (within reason) is irrelevant.

Here’s a fun link for you. Google just released a free service called Google Moderator. This is a port to Google App Engine of an existing tool we use all the time at Google. Internally it was called Dory (after the fish who asked questions all the time in Finding Nemo). What does Google Moderator do? When we have tech talks or company-wide meetings, it lets anyone ask a question and then people can vote ...

The bailout is a given. Its needed to introduce liquidity into the system. I wonder why no one is defining what happens after the 700B of mortgage and other assets are purchased by the Fed. Has everyone forgotten that we didnt trade in last year’s bankers for a new team. The bankers that we hope will reflate the economy with loans to the people and companies who need it ARE THE SAME BANKERS THAT GOT ...

Here's a good book: Yes!: 50 Scientifically Proven Ways to Be Persuasive by Dr. Robert B. Cialdini et al. I have Cialdini's other books such Influence: The Psychology of Persuasion and Influence: Science and Practice, but to be honest, I only spent a couple of hours going over them last year. Increasingly I go for the kind of non-fiction business books that are presented in small chunks with clear takeaways. This is why I like ...

This is one of those - I hope you don't need to do this - actions. But recently one of the computers here suddenly decided it did not want to have fonts work (line spacing was all messed up). So after troubleshooting everyway possible, verifying files opened fine on other computers, etc. I had the faint memory of being able to start any office application in Safe Mode. After a quick search on the PPTFAQ ...

Last night, MTV continued its self-appointed role of spreading propaganda instead of its self-described role as a Music Television Channel. As @theblogstar stated on Twitter last night "How DO you have an award show of something that you don't actually show? I haven't seen an entire music video on mtv since '97." It seems the latest MTV tactic is to import a crude and dense European host to tell us how to vote, when to ...

Tonight Microsoft aired its first ad featuring Jerry Seinfield. The ad (including Seinfield) is part of a new $300 million ad campaign Microsoft has put together to try and breathe new life in to the Windows operating system. The 90 second ad spot is compromised mainly of shoe-banter between Bill Gates and Jerry Seinfield in a Shoe Carnival where Gates is a “platinum member.” Interestingly enough, only 20 of the 90 seconds really have anything ...

I'm an HR guy so this isn't a book review; that's not what I do. This is about our culture as a Christian company and why you shouldn't be concerned about this book at all. Before there was an internal announcement of
