Quantity Always Trumps Quality (95)
on Coding Horror (2770) permalinkNathan Bowers pointed me to this five year old Cool Tools entry on the book Art & Fear. Although I am not at all ready to call software development "art" -- perhaps "craft" would be more appropriate, or "engineering" if you're feeling generous -- the parallels between some of the advice offered here and my experience writing software are profound. The ceramics teacher announced on opening day that he was dividing the class into two ...Shared by [ebarrera] (33) aconbere (33) Alan (88) Alex (18) Alex (15) AlexandrosM (78) alice (27) alleycat (25) Anand (13) Andrés David (53) AndyF (23) Antonio (13) Arik (30) Arvind (41) Baldo (33) benexia (14) Brent (136) bryantsai (63) C.M (29) Cade (209) Caleb (47) Carl Fyffe (37) Christoph Thelen (15) cisellis (130) clementi (92) Cocoy (246) Colin Charles (71) Compuwizard123 (229) Danny Navarro (29) Dave (17) Dmitry Lomov (21) Dylan Bennett (34) easyon (30) Evgeni L. / Reepicheep (74) Forrest (75) Frank Sons (46) g9yuayon (65) Gangles (64) Guillermo Esteves (36) Isaac (37) Iulian (26) James (37) Jannik (29) Jeff (161) Jeffrey (32) Jeremy (385) Joe (286) Johan (45) John Higley (19) Jon Winstanley (41) Jonathan Christopher (5) jonezy (113) jpwain (23) jvn (15) Kartik Agaram (34) Keith (14) Kenneth LeFebvre (9) Khanh Dang (7) Mark (89) Martin (25) Mike (114) Morton Fox (314) naseer (18) Pedro Lozano (2) Peter Cooper (11) peysal (27) Phillie Casablanca (52) possible248 (66) Rick Turoczy (354) Robbie (45) Roberto (111) Ron (43) Ryan S (71) S Anand (33) sarah (917) Saul (59) saurabh (58) Scott (21) Scott (58) shivanand (20) Simon (22) skabaru (48) smuggyuk (13) stefan (21) Stephen (29) Ted (42) Tim Saylor (18) TiTi (399) Toby (27) Trey (66) vevck (47) wmdmark (39) xeal (58) xrx (131) Zane Shelby (22)Explore read seven notes

- Simon said: I've paraphrased what Jeff is saying here. It is really quite profound and extends way beyond software developer or ceramics. It permeates every aspect of our life. Don't know how play the guitar? Are you going to read about it, or pick up a guitar and start practicing? Don't know how to ride a motorcycle? You can read the manual, or take one out for a spin (carefully). You did sell enough stuff? You can study more about the product and the region and the demographics, or you can knock on another door or make another phone call.In general, life is about refinement... about constantly refining who we are and what we do. Someone said to me that you can't steer a parked car. So true... the car must be moving before you can get it going in the right direction.God does the same thing with us. He asks us to make disciples as we go into the world. We may be afraid and feel unprepared, but in the act of doing, He grows us and trains us and we become more able all the time.
- Carl Fyffe said: Amazing. I have witnessed this in many different aspects of life.

Code Reviews are not just about the code (8)
on Ayende @ Rahien (268) permalinkUsually when I am doing a code review, I ask not just access to the code, but to the source control repository as well. There are quite a lot that you can learn from the source control of a project. Here is something that is both good and bad. It is bad because we have no checkin comments. It is good because we can see that we have very frequent checkins. Another thing that you ...Shared by David (45) dominik (20) Glenn F. Sprint Loses Cases on Early Termination Fees (4)
on GottaBeMobile (165) permalinkI wouldn’t call this over by any stretch of the imagination but it does herald some potential good news for mobile customers. Yesterday, a judge handed Sprint Nextel a loss in a case over early termination fees. Sprint has two weeks to respond and if they lose here, I would imagine they will most likely appeal. While Sprint and the other Telcos argue that they need these fees to recoup the subsidies that they offer ...
- Jorge said: I think that if the courts rule in favor of Sprint, they should be required offer a price break on the monthly subscriptions to individuals that choose to pay for their phone in full up front to avoid having to sign a contract. They shouldn't be allowed to have their cake and eat it too. The cake is a lie!

Web Applications Are Mostly Fairly Trivial (1)

That is to say, it's there now, but I don't expect to be able to rely on it in its current incarnation very far into the future. Google Calendar Adds CalDAV Support, Enabling iCal Sync [Google Calendar] (118)
on Lifehacker (36820) permalinkGoogle Calendar has added support for the CalDAV standard, opening up a realm of syncing possibilities for business users and webapps. Right now it's somewhat limited, with a few known issues, but the big news is that it's now possible to sync your iCal and Google Calendars without any third-party software. As the Google Operating System notes, however, it's not an entirely simple process to hook the two up, so a free option like recently-made-free ...Shared by Aaron (52) Aaron M.
