Today, I’m announcing a new meta podcast about designing scalable systems named Scalecast. I’ve been seeing more and more conference interesting presentations online but I can’t get them to work with my iphone/ipod since they require streaming flash video. I now have a simple script that can fetch the flash video from youtube, transcode it to mp4 video, including AAC audio, and publish it to Wordpress. It’s then available for use on any Apple device ...

If you've set up Gmail IMAP using Google's instructions, you may have noticed a couple of snags—namely that your Sent Mail, Drafts, and Deleted Mail aren't necessarily matching up as you'd expect between your email client and Gmail. To remedy this, you'll have to tweak a few advanced configuration settings in your client, and weblog 5ThirtyOne has the details. On the iPhone, for example:Open 'Settings' > 'Mail' > [Your Gmail IMAP account] > 'Advanced'Select 'Drafts ...

This is one of the best technical presentation I've seen. Which is all the more amazing because the speaker, Jon Bentley, spends nearly an hour talking about the quicksort algorithm. This is based on a chapter in Beautiful Code , but goes deeper into the subject, and seeing Jon present definitely adds a lot to the material. Btw there a fascinating Google/Bell Labs comment by the introducer: There's quite a crowd - well it seems ...

I'm willing to try anything within reason to get my steak just right, so this recipe is going on this weekend's menu. If you've got a secret tip for the Best ...

Google is getting closer and closer to cloning Rojo with Google Reader. First they added search and now they’re apparently adding more functionality. The search functionality in particular was interesting because I implemented the first round of Rojo search based on Lucene. An internal presentation leaked onto the web and apparently they’re going to be implementing more social functionality: The Reader team is going to integrate more social features. Currently items can be sent to ...

You may know Quicksilver as the universal command interface, data manipulation tool, and application launcher that you invoke from anywhere to do your wicked and powerful bidding. (If you don't know it as such, check out our many guides to Quicksilver.) Although you can cut down on a lot of keystrokes and work using Quicksilver through its main interface, you can cut down repetitive Quicksilver actions even further by assigning triggers to common tasks. From ...

Posted by Chikai Ohazama, Google Earth teamEvery once in a while you come across a piece of technology that instantly grabs you and you can't stop saying "Oh my god!" When I bought my 12" Mac Powerbook, for instance, just opening the box was an experience. Each item was laid out perfectly -- everything I pulled out was well designed from the power connector with the glowing ring to the pulsating light next to the ...
