Welcome back to "This Week in HTML 5," where I'll try to summarize the major activity in the ongoing standards process in the WHATWG and W3C HTML Working Group. Work continued this week on Web Forms 2, but I'm going to hold off on that until next week. And in case you missed it, Ian Hickson gave a tech talk on HTML 5, including live demos of some features recently implemented in nightly browser builds. ...

The three Godfather films have been restored, remastered, retouched, unscratched, and cleaned for release on Blu-ray and DVD. By all accounts, the original negatives of the first two films were so torn up and dirty that they could no longer be run through standard film laboratory printing equipment, and so the only option became a digital, rather than a photochemical, restoration. The final product, which the studio is calling "The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration," combines bits ...

Look, no matter who grabs the brass ring in November, the world won't come to an end. I have lived too long and seen too many elections and survived too many Presidents of varying calibers...we will be all right.Your comment made me cry .... Because, you see, I don't think we will be. Here, in my own life, I don't think we will be. We just can't stand four (or eight) more years of this.Between ...

The Russian/Georgian conflict has proven the McDonald's theory of war wrong. The theory stated that no two countries with McDonald's restaurants would ever go to war with each other. (via mr) (link)

The SGI STL documentation notes that std::map::operator[] is redundant: Strictly speaking, this member function is unnecessary: it exists only for convenience. This sentence pretty much nails what’s meant by “syntactic sugar”, defined more formally in Wikipedia as: … a term coined by Peter J. Landin for additions to the syntax of a computer language that do not affect its functionality but make it “sweeter” for humans to use. For example, Python’s @decorator syntax sweetens the ...

I’m so so excited for today’s dailies. In case you’re unfamiliar, The Dailies is a feature in which artist/designers/bloggers walk us through a day in their life, hour by hour, with lots and lots of photos! Today is a VERY special treat as we’re joined by the star of the Camilla Engman duo: her dog Morran. For those of you who read Camilla’s fantastic blog, you’re quite aware of how charming her dog is. Today, ...

Django, a project I have helped nurture for more than four years (including some time as a proprietary project when I worked at the Lawrence Journal-World) has today reached a milestone: we've given it a "1.0" status. In the world of open-source programming, this means it's stable, well-tested and generally a strong piece of software that its developers are proud of. Given the milestone, I was reminded of an early Django memory that has stayed ...

I don't know much about cars, or what makes a good car good, and I haven't owned one in five years, but somehow I know that Ford Mustangs kick ass. Or at least they appear to. Regardless… as Ford prepares for the launch of the 2010 edition of the Mustang they have issued a press release for the redesign of the badge. Fitting somewhere between logo design and sculpture, this new pony comes with some ...

Here's the setup: You're one of 20 or so cars driving around in a perfect circle. No seriously, it's a perfect circle. So your only job is to follow the car in front of you. And keep your speed at around 20 miles per hour. The result? You guessed it: traffic jams! Check out the video evidence. And apparently this experiment corresponds to real-world observation in at least one important way: In both cases, the ...
