I really like presenting and traveling around and meeting people, but I just hate being away from my kids. It's visceral. It's physically painful. I bring them whenever I can, but during this last trip to New Zealand and Australia it wasn't possible and I was away for 8 days. Almost killed me. Since I work from home, when I need to talk to folks in Redmond I use Office Communicator, sometimes ooVoo if we ...

The Pope dons red Prada kicks, politicians break out red ties in election season and that darn Netflix package always seems to stand out in a crowd of manilla and ivory mail. Why red? Do humans have a penchant for the rainbow’s most fiery color? This study released in 2005 discovered that red-clad athletes out-performed competitors donning blue uniforms and suggested that the win discrepancy occurred because of an innate association of red with dominance ...

Microsoft yesterday re-introduced its "Ultimate Steal" program, offering students (but, in reality, anyone with a .edu address) its Office Ultimate 2007 package for $59.95, which goes for $680 on retail shelves. The company will also put up its Visio Professional 2007 design package and a Vista Ultimate Upgrade at the $60 price on Sept. 8. The web-only offering will be available "throughout the academic school year," according to a press release, but if you haven't ...

Yesterday I did a couple of interviews at Facebook’s headquarters that’ll be up over the next couple of weeks. But in between I stopped at Chris Putnam’s desk. I’ve known him since he was 16, living in Atlanta (he showed me a web service he built so that people on the Internet could listen to him practice his piano). Anyway, he’s the guy who built Facebook’s video system. Interesting that he has three monitors on ...

Why 606 pixels wide? That seems really arbitrary, and not really easily scalable to popular resolutions (640x480 for TV, 320x240 for most web stuff, etc.).I've been using 640 pixels wide as my standard for a long time, and it seems to work really well. Scales by a nice even factor, down for small devices, or up for HDTVs, etc. It's a nice compromise on file size and quality, too (though there's a lot more to it than that). Anyone know what's so special about 606 pixels, or is it just this crazy guy at Facebook? ;-)
