Hugh Pickens writes "Time Magazine reports on a $4 million US Army contract to begin developing 'thought helmets' to harness silent brain waves for secure communication among troops that the Army hopes will 'lead to direct mental control of military systems by thought alone.' The Army's initial goal is to capture brain waves with software that translates the waves into audible radio messages for other troops in the field. 'It'd be radio without a microphone,' ...

Nearly two months ago, we introduced the Google Elections Video Search gadget on iGoogle, a tool that transcribes and indexes the spoken content on YouTube's Politicians channels. It didn't take long for folks to find some creative ways to use it! Now it's possible to enjoy this technology in a bigger way: We just launched Google Audio Indexing (aka GAudi) in Google Labs. The dedicated site offers more features, such as "search within video" and ...

This is really serious stuff. A bill, decriminalizing abortion in Victoria, (Australia's southern state) is going through parliament. (Source-http://catchthefire.com.au/blog/2008/08/22/urgent-abortion-bill-tabled-in-victoria-bad-news-little-time/) “Below is a very alarming development in Victoria and if it gets through we will be permitting abortion (better known as murder) right up until 9 months! Please take some time to pray and act immediately! These are the next generation of Aussies being taken away from us! They have the right to live! It is ...

Make no mistake. The cute comic book and the touchy-feely talk about user experience is little more than a coat of paint on top of a monumental hatred of Microsoft. Chrome, the Webkit-based Google browser that launches tomorrow at Google.com/chrome, will give them a real foothold on the desktop and way more control over how web applications perform. They’ve built their own Javascript engine despite the fact that Webkit already has one. This should make ...

When I read the comic about Google Chrome, I determined that Google isn't trying to compete with Internet Explorer and Firefox. They are trying to compete with Windows. Chrome is the beginning of an online operating system.

Engadget has photos of what they say is going to be a mobile phone running Google-backed mobile system Android. Did I buy what I needed to buy?"..."I've got plenty of customers who tell me, "This is going to cost ...

Doctors might soon be able to regrow injured muscles, tendons and bones without invasive surgery, simply by injecting a person's own stem cells into the site of an injury. Veterinarians are already doing it with injured horses, and research into human applications is well under way. The National Institutes for Health seem to think regenerating human muscle and bone using a person's own adult stem cells is nearly ready for prime time. Last week, the ...

A few news outlets, mostly in the UK, have picked up the story of gastropod-enabled email delivery. The RealSnailMail project out of Bournemouth University uses snails with RFID tags to deliver email. The service will officially launch at SIGGRAPH on August 11, 2008. While it's still under development, the perpetrators write, "For testing purposes some messages may be forwarded sooner than expected. Sorry we can not guarantee unreliability of service at this time. We hope ...

June promises to be an interesting month for Yahoo. The company filed it’s proxy statement yesterday, setting the date for its annual shareholder meeting on August 1. Activist shareholder Carl Icahn, who has already proposed his own alternate slate of board members, is now also calling for CEO Jerry Yang’s head. Icahn points to a recently unsealed complaint in a shareholder lawsuit that details the lengths Yahoo has gone to squirrel the deal with Microsoft. ...
