This week, we've added another layer to the Gallery in Google Earth. Spain-based Wikiloc aggregates thousands of GPS tracks for various outdoor activities provided by its growing user community. The layer not only lets you display the GPS tracks in Google Earth, but gives you additional information like the distance covered, the elevation maxima, a personal description of the trip as well as pictures taken by the user. This can be interesting to explore, and ...

Our friends on the Blogger team just lauched Following. Blogger users can now "follow" blogs they like, given them an easy way keep up with their favorite blogs, and allowing authors to see who their readership is. Better yet, followed blogs also show up in your Reader account, in their own folder. That way you can get the full power of Reader's tagging, sharing and starring without having to maintain two separate reading lists. Of ...

The guys at Think Geek are bringing R/C junkies one of the cheapest 3-channel mini choppers on the market with the new "Black Stealth." Unlike dinky 2-channel versions, the Black Stealth can handle forward flight with ease—or so they claim. In fact, Think Geek goes so far as to say that it is the easiest to fly small copter they have ever used. I would be kind of skeptical with a price tag of only ...

When it comes to the availability of good mapping data, not all parts of the world are created equal. That’s why Google is taking a wiki approach to filling out the white spaces on its maps, particularly in developing nations. Back in June, it launched Map Maker for a small group of island nations where there isn’t great existing cartography data. But now it’s added India to the countries that can be modified on Google ...

I really like this thing however I think they need to make it monotized for contributors and I think they need to make it available in more places.

I hope they do this here. Google maps needs some serious editing by the masses. Wiki would be the way to go.

I was recently interviewed for the India based Daily NEws and Analysis on why firms would find it hard to leave China. It was an interesting spin on the recent discussions of China losing its cost advantage, and the resulting article Why China is so hard to leave had some really good quotes that worked on this question: Where else but in China can you source the huge quantity of goods that Wal-Mart needs, for ...

Google has added Google Suggest to their homepage. When Google suggest first-launched Buster McLeod (AKA Erik Benson) checked the suggested term for each letter to create the Google Alphabet, 2004 edition. When Google News Suggest launched in 2006 I did the same. Now in honor of Google Suggest graduating from labs here is the annotated Google Alphabet, 2008 edition: A = amazon B = bebo C = craigslist (in 2004 this was cnn) D = ...

I have to confess that one of the social networking tools I find most valuable is Goodreads. (It's a close second to Twitter, and way ahead of Facebook, Friendfeed, or Dopplr.) Unlike twitter, where I follow hundreds of people (possible because of twitter's minimalism) and am followed by thousands, on Goodreads, I follow and am followed by a small circle of friends and people whose taste in books I trust. As someone who loves books, ...

Your current cheap options for international data from AT&T are 20MB for $24.99 or 50 MB for $59.99—ream city, though without them there's no lube at all, as Blam found out when he came back from Brazil, where AT&T's int'l roaming discounts don't apply. AT&T now has two iPhone specific plans: 100MB for $120, and 200MB for $200, a savings of $0 and $40, respectively. Still, ouch. [AT&T]
