Hello, web tech enthusiasts! I’m going to talk about a little feature I implemented back before taking a little hike, as part of fixes for Acid3: support for the DOM 3 Core Text.replaceWholeText() and Text.wholeText. Most likely you’re familiar with neither, as browsers only started implementing them in the last year or so, and I don’t recall hearing web developers clamoring for support for them, so here’s a brief summary. Suppose you have the following ...

Browsing the web is typically a very solitary activity, even if the Web 2.0 revolution has given us easy tools like FriendFeed or SocialMedian to share our online activities. However, a different breed of services like Browzmi or the Y Combinator funded Socialbrowse are trying to make the actual browsing experience more social by displaying your friends' actions right in the browser. Socialbrowse is releasing a new version of its service today which, besides being ...

If you needed any proof that Muxtape was wildly popular, consider the number of copycats and streaming music alternatives that have popped up since the site went offline. We’ve already looked at 8Tracks, which offers similar features, and OpenTape which allows you to host a Muxtape clone on your own server. If neither of those options quite float your boat, check out Tumbltape. As the name suggests Tumbltape uses the dead-simple blogging tool Tumblr to ...

There has been some changes to the SUMO team recently. Jason Barnabe, who maintains the Support Forum, unfortunately doesn’t have enough time to maintain a full-time job and administrate the Support Forum at the same time. He has made awesome contributions to the project over the year, and we’re incredibly thankful for that. Fortunately, he will remain an active SUMO contributor, so we certainly haven’t seen the last from him! Also, our Live Chat maintainer ...

By Sachin Dhall and Smashing Editorial team If you are one of those people who work with fonts on regular basis, then choosing, comparing and analyzing fonts is a serious business for you. Font management is not always as easy as a walk on the cake. Font management issues like installing and uninstalling fonts, handling missing fonts, taking care of font conflicts always keep graphic designers and typographers on their toes. Also hundreds or thousands ...

It’s been a little while since I’ve last written a post. Not that I haven’t had anything to write about, I just haven’t had the time with all the hectic things going on right now. I have, however, been posting a good amount to the Cool Tools Lineup. So, be sure to check it out or even subscribe if you’d like; it’s an ongoing, short & sweet list of ‘cool tools’ that I come across ...

Some computations in JS take a long time, like this (incredibly poor!) implementation of the Fibonacci sequence: function fibonacci(n) { if(n == 0) return 0; if(n == 1) return 1; return fibonacci(n - 1) + fibonacci(n - 2); } Any developer that puts this function on a web page and then asked for the 35th number in the sequence would succeed in locking up most browsers until the number was either calculated or the user ...

So far we're pretty smitten with Google's Chrome. It's certainly not without its faults, but for version 1.0 of a browser it's pretty sharp. We've compiled a list of 10 things we'd really like to see added or tweaked. Some come from other browsers, and some are just improvements on some of the existing features. Google, we hope you're listening. 1. Profile roaming between multiple browsers. This may be a pipe dream, but if Foxmarks ...

Now that we’ve taken a macro view of a few uninstall survey trends, we can dig into some of the details. The following two charts summarize the response to the second multiple choice question: “Why did you uninstall Firefox? (select all that apply).” The initial results are encouraging. Fewer users uninstalled due to printing, security, usability, missing features, and web page rendering. Furthermore, more users were planning to return to Firefox! Perhaps the biggest surprise ...
