Like a few million other people I recently bought an iPhone 3G. But unlike a few million other people I bought TWO of them -- one for my young and lovely wife. That puts me in the rare position to actually speak from experience about a current networking issue: what's the deal with these iPhones? Is it the phone or the network that is causing problems? And the answer is: both. Our experience with the ...

coondoggie writes "The online Hitman scammer, who threatens to kill recipients if they do not pay thousands of dollars to the sender, is still sending out thousands of emails and the FBI is again today warning users to ignore the spam and report any incidents to the Internet Crime Complaint Center. Two new versions of the scheme began appearing in July 2008, the FBI said. One instructed the recipient to contact a telephone number contained ...

Although it’s probably the worst mistake you can make as a journalist, it periodically happens to big media publications. Earlier today, Bloomberg sent a 17-page obituary of Steve Jobs over the wire, quickly retracting it with the following message: “An incomplete story referencing Apple Inc. was inadvertently published by Bloomberg News at 4:27 p.m. New York time today. The item was never meant for publication and has been retracted.” There’s nothing much to be said ...

In November of 2005, Nicholas Negroponte and his OLPC CTO Mary Lou Jepsen traveled to Tunisia for the UN-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society, where they were able to present a "working" $100 laptop concept to Kofi Annan, UN secretary general. Ok, so the much-rumored Nikon D90 is now official, but over at Chase Jarvis Photography they know all about the camera: they were asked to "test the bejeezus out of the Nikon D90 for weeks-on-end prior to anybody even knowing it existed." Armed with a bunch of D90s taped-up to disguise their identity they piggybacked testing the device on top of some commercial photo shoots, looking at the D-movie 720p video recording, IS03200 shooting, the ...

Mozilla just ensured I won’t use IE8 because it released Ubiquity. What is it? It’s a box that lets you ask different questions and get answers. It’s sort of like search. But far more powerful. It’s not for non-passionate Internet users. They won’t get it. It takes some time to learn how to use this feature. (To get what I’m talking about when I use the term “passionate” you should see my previous rant about ...

The rubber hand illusion is more than a vaguely creepy parlor trick. It's a window into relationship between our mental and physical self-conception. During the illusion, a participant's hand is hidden, and a rubber hand positioned so that it appears as her own. She knows that it's fake -- but when both hands are stroked simultaneously, what's seen and felt becomes blurred. Suddenly the rubber hand literally feels like it belongs to her. Consciously she ...

Valleywag brings us a well researched insight into the dramatic situation in Google’s cafeterias. A culinary tragedy is brewing over there, friends, and I can almost hear the collective cry of Googlers as their selection of dishes shrinks. The rest of the world, of course, silently rejoices the fact that these flamboyant showoffs might soon be forced to eat the same plebeian meal as most of them: burger and coke. An anonymous reader writes "Think it's impossible to see four-dimensional objects? These videos will show you otherwise. Some mathematicians work with four-dimensional objects all the time, and they've developed some clever tricks to get a feeling for what they're like. The techniques begin by imagining how two-dimensional creatures, like those in Edwin Abbot's 'Flatland,' could get a feeling for three-dimensional objects. When those techniques are transferred up a dimension, the results are gorgeous."Read more of ...

Leading indicators are measurements that change over time and suggest future trends for important second-order results like population growth and economic development. Economists in particular are often looking for indicators that have been known historically to lead the overall economy. If unemployment goes down, for example, it is a good bet that shortly thereafter income will rise and the economy will improve. It's for this very reason, then, that economists and Wall Street fund managers ...
