At large, multinational companies, change is slow because of The Process. Not that Matt had any major problems with The Process — he knew what he was getting into when he started his job. A change begets meetings, which beget approvals, which beget forms that have to be signed in triple-triplicate, which beget more meetings, and maybe after a month or two you will have successfully added a column to a report. All of Initrode ...

"I started work in my new job as Technical Manager full of enthusiasm, only to be thwarted by a flabbergasting array of absurd working practices imposed by the despotic dinosaur of a Development Manager I have to report to," Amanda L. writes. "What makes this more fascinating is that: "this list is not a collection of experiences or anecdotes picked up from different sources. "this list is not an embellishment of any existing practices at ...

Where are my keys? Cam S. had checked under every couch cushion, in every jacket pocket, under every bed, everywhere for his keys. While checking the kitchen counter for the third time, he glanced at the oven clock. 8:35. Even if the skies had opened up right that minute and his keys descended on a golden platter, he'd still be at least ten minutes late for work. It was then that he peeked in the ...

Last year we wrote about AllianceP2P, a safe and secure way for Windows, Linux and Mac users to share content with each other in an encrypted environment. There are Alliance networks running alongside other filesharing communities, and others set up by mutual friends as an added layer of communications and filesharing capability. A little like a private tracker, you either have to be invited to an Alliance network - or help the hydra and make ...

One of my users today had a bit of a hissy fit today when she plugged in her USB thumb drive into the Sun Ray and it did nothing. That is it did nothing visible. Behind the scenes the drive had been mounted somewhere but there was no realistic way she could know this. So I need a way to get the file browser to open when the drive is inserted. A quick google finds ...

I was introduced to bug tracking software many years back at my second programming job. And by “introduced”, I mean forced – practically at gunpoint – to use it. And boy, did I hate it. Why do I have to put every stupid thing I do, I remember thinking, whether it’s a stupid bug or not, in some stupid system so some stupid project manager can look at my stupid tasks? I quickly got over ...

Sun Ray (unfortunately) lacks a GUI tool for accessing USB thumb drives & gnome-volcheck requires a source code change to examine alternate removable media directories. Utthumb is a Zenity/Korn Shell based GUI tool for accessing, viewing & removing USB Thumb Drives on Sun Ray. Utthumb will handle multiple USB thumb drives. Utthumb requires zenity & has only been tested on Solaris 10 & Nevada. Here is a screen snap: Installation: Download utthumb.zipunzip utthumb.zip Follow instructions ...

While I'm a happily married man, I just spent an hour with a woman I'll never forget. I should thank the TSA, for if they had any clue on how to schedule their staff, we might have just been two ships that passed in the night..er..day. I'm pretty sure the TSA staffing formula looks like this (5/1)a + HOSPb = 2 Lanes Open. Wouldn't it be brilliant if somehow there was a way they could ...

I have a new TNG episode review up at TV Squad today. This time, I did Justice:After dropping some human colonists off in the Strnad solar system, the Enterprise notices a rather nice Class M planet in the nearby Rubicun system, called Rubicun III. Picard sends an away team down to the surface to find out if it's a good place for some shore leave, and they return with some very good news: it's clean, ...

There is no debating the benefits of technology to the field of health care. From medical imaging to cancer research, information technology plays a huge role in the betterment and saving of lives. Sometimes however, things that are meant to help turn out to hurt. It wasn't that long ago in the scheme of things that doctors used to recommend smoking. IT people (frequently) get it wrong too, and the Windows based PC is a ...

Sometimes as a blogger you don’t want to create a new entry just to report an interesting article you found. (Some people use del.icio.us links for this purpose, but I find that to be less than user-friendly.) A much nicer solution is to provide a Reading List of sorts, similar to the point of a blogroll, but at an item level. The ideal Reading List would directly include the content to be read, rather than ...

I've been asked a few times how to add additional CAM users without having to run utconfig -u then utconfig again. Usually I would instruct people on files to hack manually, but that's not the proper way. Here's the proper way to add more CAM users. Logon as root Change directory to /opt/SUNWbb/bin Run bbmkuser without any options, it will display the following: # ./bbmkuser current settings: prefix: utcu start : 150000 count : 25 ...
