It seems there may be a reason federal law-enforcement officials are not interested in pursuing serious charges against the white-supremacist tweakers who were caught this week in Denver: The man making the decision is a Republican operative. And when it came to a threat against John McCain by a black man, he had a completely different approach. The AP story describing the official pooh-poohing of the threat gives us a clue: "We're absolutely confident there ...

The Hacked! USB Drive is actually a 2GB flash drive that just looks like a frayed USB cable. ZOMG, people will look at that and be so confused! The only thing that could make it better is if, instead of a frayed USB cable, it was a real severed arm complete with tattoos and 4GB of storage. Imagine the looks you'd get with that hanging out the side of your laptop! Looks like "OMG, I'm ...

Ok, I can't contain myself. The logo for the Democratic National Convention is a train wreck. The Democrats should be eager to cast off the negative stereotypes that they've accumulated since since Gore lost to Bush in 2000 -- weak on defense issues, wishy-washy, too touchy-feely, disorganized, and unfocused. But this logo does exactly the opposite. The soft gradients and jumbled type only serve to reinforce those negatives. The colors are washed out. Red, white, ...

Mother JonesVia Andrew Sullivan, here's a clever interactive map from Mother Jones that color-codes countries by the number of U.S. troops stationed there. The scroll bar allows you to see how levels have changed over time since 1950 in five-year increments. You can watch the troop presence in Vietnam gradually increase over the course of 20 years before disappearing completely, or see the military's several arrivals and departures from Iraq over the last half century. ...

Image: NASA/JPL/Cornell With the Phoenix lander busily working away on Mars and grabbing the recent headlines, we haven't heard much from the other two robots on the Red Planet, the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. She's waiting for the sun's rays to get a little stronger before moving on, but has been taking images of her ...

Via Twitter, the Phoenix lander said, "I saw this beautiful sunrise yestersol. Bittersweet, as it means an end to midnight sun in the Martian arctic." At Phoenix's location above Mars arctic circle, the sun doesn't set during the peak of summer in the northern hemisphere. If you recall, Phoenix took a montage of images of the non-setting sun last month. But now, the period of maximum solar energy is past. On Sol 86, or the ...

In my last post (part 1 here), I discussed what I perceived to be the purpose of Liturgiam authenticam: a return of the Catholic Church to its historical traditions. One aspect of this desire to remain faithful to traditional Catholic faith and practice is the church’s use of the divine name as it appears in the Nova Vulgate Editio. The directive to translate the Tetragrammaton YHWH by a word equivalent to the Latin Dominus and the ...

The Georgia conflict causes more controversy for the ISS (Telegraph/NASA) During a Russian weather observation campaign, cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko took photographs above the South Ossetia region of Georgia soon after the Russian military action in the area on August 9th. According to NASA's ISS Daily Report, Kononenko was monitoring the "after-effects of border conflict operations in the Caucasus" and his orders from Moscow instructed him to carry out this task for humanitarian reasons. Some sources ...

Mozilla launched a new experimental browser plug-in Tuesday that has the power to change the way people interact with the dozens of web services they use every day. The project, called Ubiquity, is an open-source extension to the Firefox web browser. To start testing it out, grab the prototype add-on, a free download for all platforms, from Mozilla Labs. Ubiquity is basically an attempt to build an easy-to-grasp user interface for the open web at ...

There are no guardrails in Iceland. At Gullfoss, a waterfall taller than Niagara Falls and a major international tourist attraction, there is only a thin rope stretched at shin height around the edge of the rock 6 inches away from white pounding oblivion. The rock leading up to that rope — where all the best photos can be taken — has never been dry. It’s been slick with cold waterfall mist for thousands and thousands ...

As Americans settle in to watch the two major party nominating conventions this week and next, have you ever wondered what political conventions were like before the days of the Web, television, or even the telegraph? The Humanities and Social Sciences division at the Library of Congress has provided timely summaries of the Democratic and Republican national conventions dating back to 1832 and 1856, respectively. (As I write this, it is labeled “New” on the ...
