I’ve been finalizing my book “How to build the Open Mesh” and I wanted to post the four Appendices that conclude the book. Here they are: Appendix - A = “What does Google’s Open Mesh look like?” Most of the infrastructure, services and applications that Google offers work all by themselves and are not dependent upon anything else. Google has launched OpenSocial and built Google Friend Connect. Appendix - B = “How is Yahoo building ...

I’m finalizing my book “How to build the Open Mesh” and Mary Hodder suggested that I add some Appendices on how various BigCos are building THEIR versions of the open mesh. So here is Appendix - A. Most of the infrastructure, services and applications that Google offers work all by themselves and are not dependent upon anything else. Google has launched OpenSocial and built Google Friend Connect. Google is a leader in OpenAPIs and keeping ...

Some of my buddies have expressed astonishment that I get approximately thirty-six hours of standby with my iPhone, so I'm sharing my settings. Note: this is my second 3G iPhone--I returned the first one because I was getting only five hours of standby time. This is my usage screen. One thing to notice: I don't talk much on the phone--"talk is not cheap" in my book. I am totally an email/tweet centric person. This clearly ...

This is great advice. It is especially helpful if you travel. When I'm in town, I keep my iPhone plugged in. The battery life truly is terrible. I hope this is something that Apple can fix going forward.

Guy's approach is a bit extreme- I really don't think I should turn off all of the advanced features on my phone. But it's a good example that the iPhone's standby time can be improved with some customization. We just need an app to support Locations and swap settings like the Macs too.

I consider my iPhone a "tinytop computer that can also send and receive phone calls" as opposed to a phone that can "do email and browse."

The internet has become a great enabler in democratizing information. The elitism of paid information easily accessible by a rich few has been replaced by a wealth of knowledge accessible via a few mouse clicks in our own homes. And yet, for all the positives the internet provides, our own sub-cultural biases steer us to content that often reinforces our own ignorance, as opposed to enlightening our understanding of the world and the people in ...

I am going up to New England to visit with some of our customers for the next few days. The New England area has been a good area for our business for many years. At one time in 2000 our largest NetApp customer was based in Boston. They used to buy 760's from us with 1TB of storage which filled a cabinet with FC9 shelves filled with 18GB drives. It is amazing how much has ...

One of the most powerful tools in the Karl Rove arsenal was a form of political Judo: take your opponent's strengths and turn them into vulnerabilities. For example, coming into the 2004 convention, Democrats had seen war hero John Kerry as pretty much unassailable on issues of patriotism and they made it a central theme of their event. Within a week or two, the Swift Boat Campaign made Kerry's service record an uncomfortable topic to ...

Jenkins thinks that Obama's support has some resemblance to a fandom, and McCain is exploiting the negative stereotype of the "fan" in his attacks on Obama. Jenkins doesn't like this, and explains why.

There are two views of the CTO position and Larry laid out both views in his interview and explained why he didn’t want the job (which, personally, is the best reason to want him in the position).

Robert Scoble via Scobleizer -- Tech geek blogger shared by 4 people Today I visited Larry Lessig. He’s the founder of Creative Commons. A professor of law at Stanford University. I’m willing to stand up and say it. C-SPAN, which is dedicated to airing non-stop coverage of government proceedings and public affairs programming, is the one channel that we all skip past as fast as possible on those rare occasions that we actually flip the channels on un-Tivo’d television. If not for The Onion making fun of it all the time, I’d forget it existed. If CSPAN has a demographic, no one I know is ...

The workplace, more and more, is changing, and with this change comes a whole new set of rules. The traditional office work environment and tools are still around, but at a very rapid pace, they’re being supplanted by newer and better tools, newer and better ways of working.
