Microsoft yesterday re-introduced its "Ultimate Steal" program, offering students (but, in reality, anyone with a .edu address) its Office Ultimate 2007 package for $59.95, which goes for $680 on retail shelves. The company will also put up its Visio Professional 2007 design package and a Vista Ultimate Upgrade at the $60 price on Sept. 8. The web-only offering will be available "throughout the academic school year," according to a press release, but if you haven't ...

Windows/Mac/Linux (All platforms): Songbird, the cross-platform, open-source music manager long in development, has reached its first beta release, 0.7, code-named "Fugazi." New to this version are an interface overhaul with drag-and-drop capabilities, Last.fm and smart playlist capabilities, improved cataloging and playback speed, and better album art support. If you're not familiar with the 'bird, it supports a bunch of add-ons, uses the plays-anything back end of VLC media player (in the Windows and Mac clients), ...

Filed under: Business, OS Updates, News, MicrosoftYou probably knew that a lot of dissatisfied WIndows Vista users had downgraded -- some might say "upgraded" -- to Windows XP. It was never clear exactly how many people took that step, but it was enough that Microsoft extended the shelf life for XP for a while. Now we have a number, thanks to a survey by Devil Mountain Software: nearly 35% of new Vista machines are being ...

Yes, it's true. People judge you. They judge you especially harshly online. They judge you by your teeny picture on Facebook (named, after all, after the original quick judgment document) and they judge you by your email sig file and your domain (Hotmail?!) and by the look of your bio on Squidoo or Linkedin or the number of typos in your instant messages. They even judge you by the typeface and ads on your blog. ...

Filed under: Misc. Gadgets Those Apple "Get a Mac" ads have long been an annoyance to Microsoft and to Bill Gates in particular. No surprise as an emboldened Apple with rising market share has continued to ratchet up the venom with quips like, "fear of switching is the foundation of customer loyalty for PCs," found in its latest TV ad. Now Microsoft is fighting back. Microsoft's new $300 million campaign (one of Redmond's largest ever) ...

It’s fun when you see major companies really begin to understand the nature and cultural ins ands outs of your particular subculture. Despite the fact that YouTube has grown over the last couple years that it’s a little large to be called a subculture, the majority of corporations out there wouldn’t know what to do or where to begin if they see something with the potential to turn into negative publicity surface on YouTube. We’re ...

By modelling the image-formation process as a 2D-to-2D transformation from an object’s texture map to the image, modulated by an ...

You might think that, perhaps, the recording industry would recognize how successful mixtapes were back ...

YouTube Podcaster takes your YouTube video searches and creates RSS feeds of either links or download-able videos from them. In a standard RSS reader, the search results come back as video titles and links, but copy the link to the iTunes feed and you'll get a stream of MP4-formatted videos. Given the popularity of the video sharing site, you'll want to winnow down your search to avoid overwhelming your reader or iTunes player every hour, ...
