If you haven’t heard about this yet, the Obama campaign today released an iPhone app that, among other features, enables you to call your friends prioritized by their location in battleground states. This is critical. There’s nothing more important, or more influential, than friends encouraging friends to vote, and when it comes to getting informed on the issues and what’s at stake, nothing is more effective than getting an impassioned plea from a personal contact ...

If you're like us, you already started drinking weeks ago in preparation for tomorrow night's debate, which will no doubt be the most watched vice presidential debate in the history of televised vice presidential debates. But if you're waiting till Gwen Ifill officially gets the party started, we've got something for ya. The rules are simple: each of these is to be accompanied by a shot of any neutral grain spirit you can get your ...

My dear old friend Dan Kimball (we played in a band together in Colorado and London) has one of the best hairstyles I've had the pleasure to know. Over the years Dan has refined his pompadour to the point that it is now a flawless exemplar of rockabilly style. When Dan talks about hair grease, you should pay attention. Recently, he stunned the readers of his blog by announcing he'd switched pomades. After 12 years, ...

Well, it's final boys and girls. Python 2.6 is final and up on the site. A whole lot of people put a ton of work into this release - Python 3.0rc2 will be out shortly, but the dev team made the decision to focus on 2.6 so we could all get it buttoned up and out in the wild. You should read "What's new in Python" - it highlight what changed, and the sheer amount ...

Famous hacker Kevin Mitnick was detained U.S. customs agent when his plane from Colombia landed in Atlanta on September 16. He was questioned for four hours and released. CNet has a pretty detailed account of what happened, but the most interesting part of the story, to me, was the list of stuff the authorities found in his luggage. In his luggage, they found a MacBook Pro, a Dell XPS M1210 laptop, an Asus 900 mini-laptop, ...

Here's some good news for people trying to quit smoking. Starting Wednesday in Britain, cigarette boxes will feature printed images on the packets showing just how gruesome and harmful smoking can be. The pictures will show cancerous lungs and throats, as well as yellow teeth and other side effects. They'll also feature new warning slogans, such as "Smoking can cause a slow and painful death" or "Smoking clogs the arteries and causes heart attacks and ...

Hundreds of millions of users access our services through the web, and this traffic requires lots of computers. We strive to offer great Internet services while taking our energy use very seriously. That's why, nearly a decade ago, we started work to optimize the energy efficiency of our servers and later set out to build the most environmentally sustainable data centers possible. We now believe that Google-designed data centers are the most efficient in the ...

Today at The Ajax Experience, I released Hammerhead, a Firebug extension for measuring page load times. Improving performance starts with metrics. How long does it take for the page to load? Seems like a simple question to answer, but gathering accurate measurements can be a challenge. In my experience, performance metrics exist at four stages along the development process. real user data – I love real user metrics. JavaScript frameworks like Jiffy measure page load ...

Netflix will introduce their API to the public tomorrow at the Experience AJAX conference, and according to ReadWriteWeb, it will allow free access to movie data and stats stored on their servers. This doesn't mean that anyone will be able to write a streaming video app for any random piece of open hardware. However, it does mean that people will be able to to integrate movie info (ratings, related films, etc.) into widgets, like the ...

Today the otherwise preoccupied Senate quickly passed the Webcaster Settlement Act many of you petitioned for, granting Pandora and other net radio services the right to negotiate royalties with the record industry's SoundExchange coalition for the years 2006 to 2015. OK, that's a mouthful—what it means is, they will likely not be driven to bankruptcy due to unreasonable royalty rates. I say "likely" because they still need to dot i's and cross t's on the ...

The complicated Hubble repair and upgrade mission scheduled for October 14th just got even more complicated: Last Saturday, the Hubble's command and data-handling system broke down, rendering it unable to capture and transmit images to Earth. And while Nasa doesn't know what the heck has happened—I'm thinking a bunch of aliens angry with this galactic Peeping Tom—they are actually happy this has occurred now, according to NASA's science chief, Ed Weiler: Think about if this ...
