No Matter How NBC Spins It, Olympics Web Strategy Comes Up A Loser (55)
on TechCrunch (26179) permalinkDespite its special Silverlight-powered Website and more than 2,000 hours of online video, it looks like NBC flubbed its opportunity to make its Olympics Web revenues more than a rounding error. NBCOlympics.com may have streamed 72 million videos and racked up 1.2 billion pageviews, but Yahoo Sports still edged it out with an average of 4.7 million visitors a day versus 4.3 million (source: Nieisen Online). - MV said: stupid.
- Eric Atkins said: At the end of the day, I was satisfied with the offerings. Yes, it could have been better, but it was good enough. Also, many people said that these games had less attention than Athens. So, how can you expect such an event to compete with March Madness or anything else. Also, uh, China is 12 hours ahead of us. When we are asleep, NBC is streaming the games. People don't watch video in their sleep. And finally, I had 10 channels of Olympic coverage. That's never happened. NBC did that right. I had near 24-7 coverage on my TV, meaning I didn't need to go to the computer to watch the sports.
- nybble said: I was at times frustrated when I couldn't find something that I wanted to watch, and other times elated when I could find it.But none of these numbers attempt quantify the affect that nbcolympics.com had on driving more people to watch TV. If I recall that was sort of the driving goal of the website and to declare it a strategy failure without looking at its purpose seems odd. I mean, it may not be the strategy TechCrunch (or any other web company) would choose, but hey, that's life.
- chrisbrogan.com said: You tell 'em, Schonfeld!
- Danbrown said: NBC blew it. The Olympics might be the best possible content for online distribution: live, multi-channel, big brand sponsors. The comments in the original article are good, too.
