MIT researchers are developing a novel power scavenging systes for small wireless sensors that monitor for forest fires. The sensors are powered by the trees themselves. Each sensor's battery is trickle charged with the electricity generated by the imbalance in pH between the tree and the soil. From the MIT News Office: A single tree doesn't generate a lot of power, but over time the "trickle charge" adds up, "just like a dripping faucet can ...

The Denver police union is selling T-shirts commemorating the good times they had last month. It costs just $10, which is quite a deal! The back of the shirts reads, "We get up early to beat the crowds" and "2008 DNC," and has a caricature of a police officer holding a baton. Detective Nick Rogers, a member of the Police Protective Association board, said police often issue T-shirts to commemorate big events. Rogers said each ...

Just one more reason why it is morally acceptable for any decent person to murder police men and women in Denver. I wouldn't ever convict anyone of retaliatory killings there.

We have two pieces of fantastic, albeit serendipitous, news today: Both Microsoft and Nokia are taking the major step of adopting jQuery as part of their official application development platform. Not only will they be using it for their corporate development but they will be providing it as a core piece of their platform for developers to build with. Microsoft is looking to make jQuery part of their official development platform. Their JavaScript offering today ...

Angela Detanico and Rafael Lain are a pair of young Brazilian artists, working in their home country and in France. Some of their work explores fonts and maps. Typography meets cartography in this little work, entitled ‘The World, Justified’. It shows the world we live in as only one of four possibilities, the others being a left-aligned, centred and right-aligned world. Our world is a justified one, i.e. aligned with both left and right margins. ...

Jeffrey Zeldman: If you’re selling toothpaste, your claims must be vetted by legal and medical professionals. But not if you’re selling a candidate. If you’re selling a candidate, not only can you lie about his record, but more to the point, you can lie about his opponent. ★

Zeldman would like for politics to be conducted without... politics. "What is a political issue" is a political issue. "Which claims about a candidate are true" is a political issue. Politics is truly postmodern (and that's probably a good thing).Further, politics follows politics. If you make networks arbiters of political advertising, you will get political people to start working at networks. Also, you will get openly biased networks, a la Fox News. Also, you will get political retribution from the "political advertising monitoring agency" after elections. You will also get censorship from that same agency. And, finally, politics is too important for censorship, which is ultimately what this whole proposal is about. I assume Zeldman is an Obama supporter, and he seems to just be mad that McCain is gaining ground. This makes him want to use the government against politicians he dislikes. This is exactly why free speech is crucial in politics. Nothing will kill America faster than criminalizing policy differences, which is what any proposal like this would become.

List boxes can act as a set of radio buttons (allowing people to select exactly one choice from a set of mutually exclusive options) or as a set of checkboxes (allowing people to select any number of choices from a list of options). List boxes can be configured to show more options than a drop-down menu while still taking up less screen real estate than a list of radio buttons or checkboxes. Despite these advantages, ...
