For the past couple of days I've been seeing the reports of a scientific study about cows conducted using Google Earth. The results from this study sound like a hoax. German scientists studied hundreds of herds from around the Earth found in Google Earth, they say that cows seem to align themselves with the magnetic north when lying or grazing. See Los Angeles Times story. This study was actually published in the proceedings for the ...

Pre-Photokina: After a steady trickle of leaks and rumors Nikon has announced the successor to its popular D80 middleweight digital SLR in the shape of the D90. The D90 looks very similar, but underneath it's a completely new camera that's inherited advanced features from further up the line and user-friendly features from the D40/D60 range. Oh, and it's the world's first digital SLR with a movie mode. Oher features of note include a new 12.3 ...

UPDATE: This whole D90 video thing broke really fast last night, and a very interesting discussion has started in the comments as to what this video really is. Is is a commercial? Is it a behind-the-scenes thing? Is it underground? Well, yes, to all of the above. More background, and your comments, after the jump at the bottom of the post. Now I know why Chase Jarvis has been grinning like an idiot for the last ...

Canon EOS D50 Canon has announced today the EOS 50D. (News of the camera was leaked a couple of days ago by Canon China – wonder which Canon sales office's turn it will be to leak next time). This camera is a step-up from but not a short term replacement for the 40D, which was introduced just a year ago this week. I wouldn't call it simply a coat of fresh paint since it does ...

A week from today the Mythbusters say they're going to tackle "one of the biggest myths of all": that the moon landing was a hoax. Um, isn't it the other way around? Waaay more people seem to think we took a tin can, loaded it up with rocket fuel and successfully shot ourselves to the moon and back. I'm not sure how showing how crappy your own fake moon landing looks proves anything, nor does ...

Yes, I will be. Until I can see some proof, I won't but it. If we have been there before, why can't we go again? I drove to my new job one time, now I can do it without google maps. It is logical. The moon is hard to miss.

Now that Intel's brought together the world in a harmonious USB 3.0 standard, here's a first look at the new connectors brought to us by MaximumPC. Ten times faster than the old USB spec, USB 3.0 can transfer a 27GB file in just 70 seconds. Plus, with more "lanes" of data within the connector, new USB will be able to simultaneously send and receive information—that might not sound like much, but the old USB couldn't ...

This 40-minute talk by Neil Young, CEO of ng:moco, makes a compelling case for the iPhone as the industry’s next dominant gaming platform. The address took place at iPhoneDevCamp 2 in San Francisco earlier this month. It’s a bit long, but definitely worth a watch if you’re an iPhone gamer or game developer: Neil Young > iPhone is greater than… from Dom Sagolla on Vimeo.

Last week, Wall Arch in Arches National Park, Utah collapsed. This is one of those places photographers loved to visit. I personally made images there four times. I distinctly remember one of my associates remarking to me that photographing such places was a waste of time. He said “been there – done that – everyone has that picture.” Oh really? Well not anymore. Nobody will ever again take that picture. The opportunity is gone for ...

Yesterday Nikon announced several new Coolpix cameras. Many were pleased to learn more about the P6000, which had been rumoured for some weeks. The concept appears good, challenging the Canon G9, and adding a few neat wrinkles of its own. A likely worthy entry by Nikon, potentially aimed at serious photographers looking for a competent pocket camera with raw capability. Unfortunately it turns out, as noted here yesterday, that the P6000 has crippled raw capability. ...

Photo by Scott Bourne If you ever worked in a wet darkroom, you know about dodging and burning. Dodging makes photos lighter and burning makes them darker. Photoshop’s DODGE and BURN tools do the same thing. However, most photographers don’t know that dodging and burning in RGB or sRGB mode, the two most popular photo color spaces, can cause your image’s colors to shift. To avoid these color shifts, consider a switch of your image ...
