While working on the Olympic storyline, I started doing a pencil sketch of a triumphant Flaco that turned into something verrrry different. Quite honestly...it turned into something a little more awesome than what I intended to draw. So much so, that I decided to take that rough pencil sketch and ink it up as a finished piece. Because the final product ended up being a pretty cool piece of frame-able art, I thought I'd put ...

Was roaming around Noida’s Sector 18 Friday night. A Network 18 reporter came up to me holding a book (plus a mic), and very cheerfully asked me whether I read ‘chick lit’. I immediately said ‘No’, of course. Without thinking. She gave me a really disappointed look and walked away looking for other interview candidates. Jabberwock’s been asked as well—and his experience makes me feel good about not giving an interview. If they already know ...

It's a fact of life for equipment reviewers that some readers have a greater comfort level with charts and graphs than with discussions of subjective trials. This is true even when the charts and graphs are merely graphic representations of subjective or holistic judgments, and not real data! That’s the principle, for example, behind Popular Photography & Imaging’s "SQF" charts. Although masquerading as data, complete with numbers in boxes carried to a tenth of a ...

The two french photographers, Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre, have traveled across Europe and the U.S. to portray vanishing architectural icons, concert halls where music has been forgotten, industrial buildings that saw better times, buildings reduced to the skeleton of concrete and metal. © Yves Marchand and Romain Meffre Miguel ...

© Alex MacLean Looking at things from a different perspective can lead to special photography. Areal photography, given its unique vantage point, is an specialty that takes advantage of this approach, but it has its own special challenges, challenges of composition, challenges of light, and challenges to create an image that is not a cliché. Alex MacLean, a photographer specialized in areal photography, has some really excellent work. The portfolio I liked most the is ...

I've recently been spending a lot of time with making progress on the HTTP Client implementation in the C++ Network Library. Just a few minutes ago, I posted on the blog and checked the source into the http_integration branch of the project the fact that the client now supports HTTP GET, HEAD, POST, PUT, and DELETE.Now I just need to write more unit tests, the documentation, and essentially more things to follow. Definitely a milestone ...

In the era of Web 2.0, miracles are so commonplace that I've grown a little jaded. And then along comes something like Wordle. Yes, we have seen things like this before, but something about this idea now, or perhaps it's this execution here, made my job drop. This is a clever bit of code that creates a beautiful object that creates new powers of pattern recognition that creates an assimilable world. What Jonathan Feinberg's program ...

MattSparkes writes "Cuil may only have launched this week, but it seems that they're already enjoying late-90s boom-style comforts. "Lunch is ordered in every single day. Huge fridges burst with snacks and drinks. Bowls of strawberries and muffins lie around the rest area. The company pays for a personal trainer and gym membership for everyone. A doctor calls round each Friday, after the weekly barbeque, to see if everyone's in good health. Employees drift in ...
