on TechCrunch (24236) permalinkOne of the most promising startups to come out of the LaunchBox incubator is JamLegend, a music site with mass appeal. JamLegend takes the familiar anyone-can-be-a-rockstar model made popular by videogames like Guitar Hero and Rock Band and puts it on the Web. The site is in private beta, but we have 1,000 invites for the first people to sign up at the site with the invite code “TechCrunch.” Once you sign up, you pick ...Shared by Adam Selwood (108) Alex (56) baron (42) Brendan (26) Cerpin Taxt (18) Dan McCall (76) Daniel Pritchett (58) Dominik (153) Dreamside (524) Ed (34) ekaye (43) evo (68) Fernando (167) fr3dly (77) fundament (114) iAlja (177) Jack (14) James Forbes Keir (71) Jared Cherup (28) Jbud1 (35) jeff (22) Joe Haynes (24) Joel (31) John (47) Jon (99) jonezy (110) Jrod (140) Kunal Ghate (13) Leon (18) Marco (25) Martin Dahl Pedersen (18) Q-BEE (48) Roseanne (37) Terrence (71) zapnap (108) Zoram (115) 이장 (28)Explore read eight notes

Sloppy statistics (6)
on Junk Charts (33) permalinkAs hinted in the previous post, there are rare situations in which pie charts are acceptable; typically, these charts must show proportions that add up to 100%. The Maps Of The Future Look Like Giant Cracker Jack Toys (25)
on TechCrunch (24236) permalinkPaper maps are a pain. They’re clunky, get torn easily, and never seem to fold back the way they’re supposed to. Sure, you can always turn to a laptop or iPhone to get a digital copy, but most transit websites are painfully slow and difficult to navigate. What’s a wandering traveler to do? Urban Mapping, a San Francisco based company founded in 2001, may have developed the next generation of maps. At least, they’ve made ...Shared by 2ni (35) Chris (76) cRab (38) Dan McCall (76) David Feng (36) David LEVY (27) Ed (34) Holden Caulfield (105) IanZ (54) Jaron (54) Jeremy (354) Jimmy (47) JonMoss-theappleofmyi (527) Kells Nollenberger (21) koovus (222) lmjabreu (119) Mark Whiting (79) Matthew Eber (27) Panda (53) Peter (21) Rex (590) rexy (174) Rudolf Olah (33) Rusty Mitchell (29) Sigalon (120)

Olympic tallies (4)
on Junk Charts (33) permalinkAndrew N., a reader from Australia, wasn't too impressed with the way National Nine News presents the Olympic medal table on its home page. To the extent that we want to venture beyond the typical tabular presentation, this bar chart is in fact quite appropriate. Let me explain. Lets take a tour around the world. It's the battle of the data tables. The Boston Globe's is the cleanest of the bunch. I especially like the ...Contribute comment

A tale on two charts (2)
on Junk Charts (33) permalinkBy now, everyone knows subprime mortgage lenders in the U.S. are in a world of hurt. The following pair of charts illustrates how serious the problem is. Lenders track the proportion of borrowers who are "60-day" and "90-day" delinquent, meaning late or no payment in the last 60 or 90 days. Lenders count on a contained delinquency rate in order to run a viable business. These loans stretch for often 20-30 years so it is ...Shared by Ed (34) Saket (59)Contribute comment

#106 Facebook (54)
on Stuff White People Like (612) permalinkSocial Networking sites have been embraced by white people since their inception. Because these sites use profile pages, white people can more efficiently judge friends and future friends on their taste in film, books, music, and inspirational quotes. Advanced level white people, fearful of being judged on their tastes from last week, will often only list one or two ironic things as their favorites. For example under music they would simply list “P.M. Dawn” or ...Shared by adamconner7 (277) Andrew Helms (23) Behzad (74) Bill (26) Bryan (14) Bryan (13) Carol (47) Chavtastic Jinx (36) Daniel (56) Dave (21) David (76) davidrbailey (14) Delor.es.Defacto (13) Eater (99) Ed (34) Ed (64) Eric Herboso (61) everyone loves a wee sombrero (396) Florinda P (94) g b (140) Gib (33) gorichgo [::] (44) Guczo (12) Ian Welles (21) Ishmael (31) Jamie R (76) Johan (26) Jon (50) Jonathan Sterling (141) Jordon (41) Leon Westbrook (48) Matt (40) Melissa (20) Neetu (26) Nick (22) Nish (32) Paul (277) Paul H (60) Peter (6) Philip (23) Polina (35) powlow (31) prophecyboy (87) Richard (35) Scott (17) Shea Sylvia (12) sulleh (17) tliles (53) tomi (37) Tony (124) Wiking (24) Will (15) Xavier (79) Zach (102)
- Bryan said: For a brief period of time, MySpace was the site where everyone kept their profile and managed their friendships. But soon, the service began to attract fake profiles, the wrong kind of white people, and struggling musicians. In real world terms, these three developments would be equivalent to a check cashing store, a TGIFridays, and a housing project. All which strike fear in the hearts of white people.White people were nervous but had nowhere else to go. Then Facebook came along and offered advanced privacy settings, closed networks, and a clean interface. In respective real world terms, these features are analogous to an apartment or house with a security system/doorman, an alumni dinner, and a homeowners association that protects the aesthetics of the neighborhood. In spite of these advances, some white people still clung to their old MySpace accounts. That was until they learned that Facebook started, like so many things beloved by white people, at Harvard.
