Aw, why don't these CEOs say stuff like this in press conferences? Sony Ericsson's head Bert Nordberg has shared with Swedish publication Sydsvenskan the rather salacious news that his company was asked to build the so-called Google phone before HTC... and it turned down the opportunity. Fearing brand dilution or something equally crazy, Nordberg states that Sony Ericsson is committed to building only its own-branded hardware and will not be a subcontractor to anyone. Haughty ...

I can respect a CEO that stands up for what he believes his company's image should be. In this case however I feel it was a missed opportunity that could have put the additional revenue in their pockets to invest in making their own projects more compelling. Think of it as a gateway phone to bring in new users. To late for that now.

If you've ever hired or managed or taught, you know the feeling.People are just begging to be told what to do. There are a lot of reasons for this, but I think the biggest one is: "If you tell me what to do, the responsibility for the outcome is yours, not mine. I'm safe."When asked, resist.

Apple has posted a note to iPhone developers that sounds suspiciously like a warning against including location-based advertising in a mobile app.The specific text reads: “If you build your application with features based on a user’s location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store ...

Very nice! Even nicer than the youtube and vimeo html5 experience. I can't even begin to tell you how excited I am that flash for video might be starting to die a slow and painful death. Think of all the CPU cycles the world will save! Someone should do the math on the amount of power savings around the world by using html5 and h.264 instead of flash for youtube.

I'm not sure I agree entirely... Back when computers first came out, there were no web apps, which offer a HUGE range of possibilities with ease of entry into development. Plus, look where viruses have gotten us with closed source systems that don't have restrictions on what software you run. It's idealistic and ignorant to think that the grass has always been greener.

This aspect does frighten me and I blogged about this some time ago. If the operating system on Mac is ever closed to me I am so gone. I am really Meh about the iPad, because I have an iPhone and I am okay with my phone slash iPod being closed presently. I wish it were more open and someday it being closed might bother me. I do not think I am ready to move beyond my phone being this closed though. If I needed an eReader, which my iPhone already does I might think about the iPad, because the other eReaders are closed. I was under whelmed yesterday, and would really be uninterested if the price were any higher. I bought the iPhone to eliminate carrying multiple devices, I do not want o add one the size of a book.

homo said:
This seems about right to me. The iPhone was "like" a computer in your hand, and the mobile phone itself had a history of being controlled by telecoms. But the iPad is a hybrid and while it may not be a step backward, "totalitarian" is not all that hyperbolic of a description.

Troed said:
... but like with the iPhone there will be a multitude of non-locked down devices from other manufacturers, likely running Android.

I very much agree with this point. Although the paradigm is nothing new (it's the same control users have over their iPhones and iPod Touches), I think the size of the iPad and the fact that it can serve as a personal computer replacement makes the point that much more alarming.
