Facebook malware attacks to date have largely consisted of getting user credentials via phishing sites and then spreading spam and additional phishing attempts. But a new worm is disseminating through Facebook that aims to install trojan software on a user’s machine. The worm spreads when a compromised user’s account is used to send message to others with a title such as “LOL. You’ve been catched on hidden cam, yo:” and a link to a random ...

Off the top of my head, and many TV shows live there, I can't think of any TV dramas about businesses that I've found compelling. All the TV dramas of note seem to be set in hospitals, law firms, police departments, or the White House. But then there's Mad Men. It's not only a period piece, set as it is in early 1960's America, but it focuses on an advertising agency in New York City. ...

Some autistics are leading a nascent civil rights movement, fueled by neuropsychological researchers who are taking a fresh look at the nature of autism. The condition, the researchers say, shouldn't be thought of as a disease to be eradicated. The autistic brain may not be defective, but simply different -- an example of the variety of human development. They've found that previous measures of autistic intelligence were severely flawed, that autistic brains are highly efficient ...

Imagine yourself in a room surrounded by eleven objects arranged in a circle. You memorize the position of the objects, then you close your eyes, and rotate a third of the way around (120°). Keeping your eyes closed, can you point to the object that was behind you before? Most people can do this without much difficulty, and only take an instant longer than if they'd stayed in the same position. Now imagine the objects ...

Moopz is a new web service created by the fabulous Mark Carey, the same developer responsible for RWW's innovative FriendFeed/comment integration. With Moopz, Carey brings us a conversation-tracking interface for FriendFeed that lets you keep tabs on what's hot, what's recent, as well as what's quiet (dare we saying "upcoming?"). The interface is very similar to FriendFeed - you can interact with the stories by liking and commenting, but the big difference between the two ...

Posted by Niniane Wang, Engineering ManagerA while ago, I looked around the social web and wished that it could be less static. Sure, you can leave a comment on a blog or write a text blurb on your social networking profile. But what if you want to express yourself in a more fun way, with 3D graphics and real-time avatar interactions? I started asking this question as a 20% project, and I'm excited to announce ...

another possible game changer i think. embedable 3d worlds on html pages backed by google has a really good chance of catching on for regular internet users and making second life obsolete along the way. Wait until you can embed this stuff into google maps or google earth.

So winning a contest for alphaing the room creation features of this product is what got me the iPhone. I have to say that it's interesting but not that interesting. The main difference in a years worth of work is that now it's not buggy which it was. It still is a resource hog and Windows-only. I'm honestly amazed at how slow it is but it's the first of its kind from Google and Niniane and her team had to create a lot of it from scratch I guess. Hopefully they're green lighted to keep working on it because I do see some potential in it... but it has to cut down the memory/CPU intensiveness.

Gmail has introduced a new privacy feature that will let users see how many computers their account is open on, and also allows them to sign-out remotely. Basic information is displayed as part of the page’s standard footer, and users looking for more detailed information can view a log that displays the most recent IP addresses to access the account, along with the type of access (Mobile, POP, etc.) The new feature will be especially ...

Last week we introduced you to Dropbox, a freeware application that instantaneously syncs files between computers and backs them up online through the Dropbox web interface. The Dropbox iGoogle gadget provides quick access to any of your Dropbox files through the comfort and convenience of your iGoogle dashboard. Off the bat the Dropbox gadget is a little funky, but if you install the Fix Dropbox Width Greasemonkey script in addition to the iGoogle gadget, it ...
