by J. R. Nyquist. "When a civilization begins to unravel, the first action is always internal. It is hidden, spiritual, and unobserved by the public. Brazilian philosopher Olavo de Carvalho recently pointed out that Western Civilization has produced more “educated” people than we have positions for."

According to Forrester Research, we're in the initial phases of a new 16-year cycle of technology innovation and growth called "IT Everywhere." This shift comes on the heels of the previous cycle which brought us networked computing technologies for our enterprise applications and the Internet. During this transitional period, CIOs need to be aware of which trends from the older cycle are still important and which of the new trends they should also be paying ...

The Mini brand is all about fun and owner-specified (if not always owner-created) customization. Take a look around Flickr and you'll see an amazing display of creativity. Mini fans are taking the brand ball and running with it. As a marketer, the tradeoff is one of control. Traditional marketing communications, PR, and branding was all about control: say this, don't say that, stay on the straight and narrow, conform to this set of brand guidelines ...

Microsoft's new data-centres are comprised of entire sealed shipping containers that are slotted into racks and left to run until a critical mass of their processor units have failed, then are swapped out. Starting with a Chicago-area facility due to open later this year, Microsoft will use an approach in which servers arrive at the data center in a sealed container, already networked together and ready to go. The container itself is then hooked up ...

Yesterday we wrote about Enterprise 2.0 from the point of view of the Enterprise, the buyer. The conclusion was that the impact of social media on the Enterprise was very big, addressing the very "nature of the firm". This post looks at Enterprise 2.0 from the point of view of the vendor, specifically startups. This is a 30,000 foot view, but we aim to get past the hype to insights you can use in your ...

I think this is a good list. My advice for startups that want to pitch me business? 1) Understand that just because you don't like MS products my business (an most other enterprises) run on a Microsoft backbone. Integrate with AD for security and run on IIS. 2) Understand my business, and how we are structured. Professional service orgs. are very different than big companies.

Merlin Mann lists some attributes of good blogs. Good blogs try. I've come to believe that creative life in the first-world comes down to those who try just a little bit harder. Then, there's the other 98%. They're still eating the free continental breakfast over at FriendFeed. A good blog is written by a blogger who thinks longer, works harder, and obsesses more. Ultimately, a good blogger tries. That's why "good" is getting rare. Like ...

We've known that Nike+ has long been in development for the iPhone. Now we're finally getting a peek at the first shots of the interface. From what we can skim, Nike+ users will get all of the nifty performance graphs right on the phone (before this stuff was available on the web only). But the biggest improvement over the old Nike system may be Google Maps support: We don't know just how robust the Nike+ ...

Sanjay Rishi, leader of IBM Corp.'s global auto industry consulting practice, says interest in car sharing reflects a dwindling passion for automobiles in some parts of the world, such as Europe. That, plus rising fuel prices, means fewer consumers will want to spend money on big vehicles that serve what he calls "the maximum need."Selling consumers more vehicle than they need has been the mainstream auto industry's business model for most of the past century. ...

As I wrote in my blog post at the time, Trading for Their Own Account, "I thought, whither Google, Yahoo! and Amazon?" At the time, I ...
