I just went back to check out Jaiku. It’s a clean interface. There’s a US short SMS code so it’s easy to use from my phone. There are people using it still, and it has some features that Twitter doesn’t. I’m a bit frustrated with Twitter. They deleted my friend Dave Fisher for no apparent reason, and didn’t put him back until Jeff Pulver sent a message to the senior team. They’ve capped a few ...

The past week saw a steady flow of new WH '08 state polling data with 15 new surveys in 11 states, including 10 battleground state releases. Despite the flurry of new polls, Barack Obama continues to lead John McCain 292 EVs to 234 EVs (with 12 EVs up for grabs) in The Hotline's Electoral College estimation -- identical to the total in our 7/17 update. Within each candidate's electoral total, however, some movement has occurred. ...

Growing up in America cripples us wine lovers from the very start. Sure, we are born into the land of boundless opportunity, where the dreams and hard work of a vineyard worker can result in the ownership of a winery twenty years later. But unless our parents provide us with a very particular upbringing, we grow up thinking that wine isn't wine unless it has the name of the grape on the front of the ...

To those of you in the wine world paying attention to the dollar's stomach churning lows against the Euro, this news may come as little or no surprise. This morning, Chateau Cos d'Estournel announced it's purchase of the historic Chateau Montelena in Napa. While not the first bit of investment from Bordeaux in the Napa Valley, it is certainly a significant one, given both the landmark historical status of Chateau Montelena as well as the ...

As hard as it is to believe the summer is flying by and before we know it harvest will be upon us. We always judge the passing of time by the way the vineyards look…and while out on a walk about a week-and-a-half ago we noticed some significant changes happening in our local Oak Knoll District vineyards. The process of veraison, where the grapes begin the ripening process and change color, is already well underway. ...

Drudge is reporting that the New York Times has rejected an editorial submission from John McCain's campaign that seeks to counter a piece written by Barack Obama that ran last week in the paper. NYT Op-Ed editor David Shipley told the McCain campaign that the GOPer's item didn't address the issues presented by Obama in 'My Plan for Iraq.' "It would be terrific to have an article from Senator McCain that mirrors Senator Obama's piece," ...

As a public service, Blogenberg is launching The AEWP (Another Enlightened White Person) alert. One was spotted on Fox News Channel. Bob Beckel, ubiquitous Democratic strategist, was asked why it is, seemingly, that comedians, satirists, etc. are hesitant to make jokes about Barack Obama. “One, he’s black and I can say that as a liberal,” was Beckel’s response. On the Blogenberg AEWP meter this rates a double wow, as in Wow, I didn’t realize that ...

There seem to be two major themes running through today's posts. One is Skadden summer associates. See here and here. And the second is... monkeys! Our first post of the day was about litigation over a monkey named Richard. And now we hear this fun tidbit, about Weil Gotshal & Manges: Weil had a prom for their summers. The firm rented a monkey for the occasion. Seriously. And it wasn't just a paralegal in a ...

Update: Friday afternoon, we received a call from Barrett Marson, the communications director for the Arizona House of Representatives. He alerted us that the legislature has, in fact, hired Ken Starr, but has yet to secure the extra $575 per-hour-funding needed to pay his fee — though he hopes it will be secured soon. “It’s a lot of money for Arizona to spend,” said Marson, “but we absolutely think someone of Mr. Starr’s caliber is ...
